Montgomery County Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day With a Day of Service Activities and Musical Celebration

Saturday, January 14 and Sunday, January 15 -- Food Collection Drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Food being collected for Manna Food Center at all 28 Giant Food Stores across Montgomery County. Non-perishable food items can also be donated at any one of the volunteer sites or the musical tribute at Strathmore.
Monday, January 16 -- Volunteer Projects organized by Montgomery County’s Volunteer Center at:
Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road, North Bethesda, 1 to 3 p.m.Activities include decorating cards for troops, assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for local shelters, constructing fleece blankets for Montgomery Hospice and packing snow day boxes for Meals on Wheels.
Gapbuster Learning Center, Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place, Silver Spring – 12:30 to 3 p.m. A variety of family friendly service projects will be offered.
The Universities at Shady Grove, Multipurpose Room in Building 11, 9630 Gudelsky Drive, Rockville – 10 a.m. to noon. Various family friendly service projects will be available to participants.
Monday, January 16 -- Tribute and Musical Celebration from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee celebrate Dr. King’s birthday. The musical celebration will feature the Takoma Academy Camerata. Comprised of 30 high school students under the musical direction of Ms. Lulu Mwangi Mupfumbu, the Camerata specializes in spiritual performance, focusing on Negro spirituals and civil rights era music. The 2012 recipients of the Children of the Dream, Humanitarian and Literary Arts Awards will be announced.
