send emails instead of letters or postcards,
use evite instead of mailing invites/rsvp card.
Just 2 weeks ago post cost went up to 45c/32c.

I think the USPS in additon to closing locations wants to reduce mail to just m-f.

katie: that is true. That is why I think the change needs to be gradual not immediate. I know this sounds mean.morbid but when current elderly die off( those born pre 1970 I'd say) , the next generation of elderly will be those who ARE using computers so they will be well versed in online commerce. Still I dont think post offices should be obsolete. There are still fedex office and ups offices.

melissa: I share in your frustration. Why didnt the USPS have a notice up in the windows at the 2nd street location? Make fliers? They went about this clandestinely bc they knew we would object to not having a PO in DT SS.

there was a large sign up in front, at the corner of Spring and Second, for months

jag: I disagree that it makes sense. I get that USPS seized the opportunity to sell since they got milllions from the developer. But they dont seem to care about convenience to their patrons as there is no alternate location. PLus I love that 2nd ave was open late, til 6pm and til 7p during the rush seasons. New apts have been built in DT:

The density of this site is currently way too low considering the location. It makes no sense to have a small 1 story building and a sea of parking a couple blocks from the metro in DTSS. I have no idea why you're citing 3 buildings (2 of which were completed, what, 6 years ago?). You're trying to say DTSS is already too big, or something?

The density is low bc the spot was for a commercial bldg not another apartment complex. I wonder if Insight will apply for a density change?

I sight these bc there is alot of apts in SS. All up down E W hgwy, blair mill rd, 16th street....yet businesses are closing so perhaps we need to slow down.

What is the point you're trying to make? There's demand for more housing in DTSS so the builder is adding more housing. You're trying to say that's a bad thing? Because a parking lot is better than $500K/year in property taxes added to county coffers? Because having 500 more people spending their money in SS is a bad thing? You're making zero sense in any of your posts.

jag my point is clear. That is why I quoted you and then replied. DTSS needs a full service post office. USPS sold 2nd avenue for 7mill w/o securing a future spot. You next said all there is near SSMetro is a sea of parking lots which is why I posted the many many many apts all up and down 16th st, e w hgwy, easter ave, 13 ave, cameron, fenwick, and more are coming.

& with the crackdown on housing loans, are you sure that $500k property tax is guaranteed? I def do want more bodies in DT, however is there retail for them to spend @ DT? When is City Place going to be a mall again? Restaurants closing every day, the BarnesNoble is gone.

EXACTLY. Do you know why that is? It's a thing called supply and demand. SS's vacancy rate is extremely low. Maybe if we continue adding thousands of units a year then sooner rather than later it'll become affordable, to an extent (a grocery clerk certainly won't ever be able to afford living a block away from the SS metro. That's just not going to happen.).

And thanks for clarifying - you wish the USPS set up a new post office before deciding to close this one. That makes sense. Everything else about listing the locations of parking lots and other residential properties didn't.

kathy: 2nd ave isnt DT ss but it is a convenient location. The 16th street plaza is literally just around the corner from 2nd avenue so that is a good location. PLus more parking is available @ 16th street plaza.

SS, MD is the second largest city in the State of Maryland, and there is NO plan to have a central post office. I understand (with regret) the USPS closings in small rural towns.. but in a major metropolitan area? WHERE is our leadership??

Additionally there is a 'pedestrian zone ahead' warning @ 16th/lyttonsville for those jaywalkers from the 8600 condos and jaywalkers from the mall.
