Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan.

NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you."

The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy.

The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges from both candidates. After a weak performance after the Republican Convention, Romney surged following Obama’s listless performance after the first presidential debate. Nevertheless, the president cemented a lead in battleground states heading into Tuesday’s election.

Barack Obama won Maryland’s 10 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney.

He captured 60 percent of the votes in Maryland.

In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race three out of five times.

Obama’s performance in Maryland wasn't necessarily surprising, considering Maryland has voted for the Democratic candidate in recent presidential elections.

Do you think we'll continue to exist as a nation for 4 more years? With the crime rate rising every day, no jobs, everything imported how long will we be able to continue at the present rate? It doesn't look promising at all. This man will certainly have his hands full if he tries to deal with all this. If he tries.

Nice start for the president. Wait until the military downsize starts.

What are you going to do when the checks dry up and the recession starts.

Buzz, we will have this discussion in 6 months. A single day's results a trend is not created. Like saying today's forecast of snow means a blizzard is on the way.

The Republicans tried to pin a bad economy on the President and almost succeeded.

And yes, the military needs downsized. I am tired of paying for troops in Europe, Japan and Korea while those companies sell goods and make profits off us.

Dwight D. Eisenhower said, "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." He warned us, except that the "potential" is now here.

If you put up with all the negativity for all those year and now you want to ask the question about 4 more years, yes 4 more years toward cleaning up the shhhht that all the other presidents made.if they were doing so much why is the economy the way it is. it didn't get this way in the last 4 years, its been like this for almost a decade and some. Good post Honeygo.

The crime rate is clearly not going up.

Well one thing is for sure Jag has the financial IQ of a turnip. It is obvious Jag does not understand equity markets. Obama has greatly assisted precious metal investors thanks to his irresponsible fiscal bailouts and unlimited quantitative easing initiated by his friends at the federal reserve. Thank God Obama was reelected! The next four years will offer exponential wealth building opportunities for anyone who understands what is happening. For the rest of the financially clueless, good luck you're going to need it.

Jag,

You are aware that our dollar is losing the value the faster the government prints more money, and the companies out there could be over valuing their stocks to make up for lost value of the dollar which could explain the fact that stock market has been "positive" mean while many of those same companies are not hiring new employees, because they simply cannot afford it.

"Obama has greatly assisted precious metal investors thanks to his irresponsible fiscal bailouts and unlimited quantitative easing initiated by his friends at the federal reserve." This indicates you believe you know what moved the market as it relates to precious metal investors.

Although I may agree with you that there are many fools and ignorant people that post on the Patch, beware, I am not one of those.

Republicans are typically negative-minded - it looks like you fit right in.

Every time there is a debt discussion the GOP talks about leaving nothing for the kids. It happened in the '70s & '80s, too. Yes it's something to be addressed, but not to the degree the GOP would have you believe.

This is about earlier comments you made--couldn't find a reply option. As noted before, crime is down. Obama did win the popular vote. And did you notice the recession we just had? I don't want to be hateful (hate "enemies," hate immigrants, hate uppity women, hate blacks and Hispanics and foreigners, hate divorcees, hate gay people, etc.) like the Tea Party, but I think if we weren't born yesterday, we know the mess we're in is a Republican mess. 70% of our national economy is ordinary people (the 99%) shopping, and if you take all the money from them and give it to the rich, who don't spend it in OUR economy, as has been happening since 1970, you get the recession we just had. Great books by Bob Reich, Paul Krugman, and others show us how we got into this mess. I think you should be less aggressive and also should be more rigorous about the facts.

It's about the fact that there are two parties in this country, both of whom are so extreme that this election was about choosing the lesser of TWO evils. My life is not better off than it was four years ago and I don't think that it will be now, that's for sure. However, I also don't believe that Romney would have made it better either. Or you can quit your job and live off of foodstamps, and after a year or two qualify for medicaid after you lie about not be able to get a job. It's pretty simple and fun - good luck.

Eastsider: Here's something we can probably all agree on. There's lots of blame to go around. Heck, Bachman, one of the top crazies in the Tea Party, BARELY won re-election. Akin got beat. Paul Ryan was re-elected but his district also voted for Obama at the same time, not Romney.

The Norquist Pledge needs to go. it's a nice idea if your nation's debt to GDP ratio isn't over 100%. Meanwhile, 'true liberals' need to accept Obama's idea of balancing the budget based on a premise of 2.5 to 1 ratio of cuts to taxes, and NO, increasing revenue does NOT mean you spend it. It goes towards balancing the budget and nothing more. That's still talking about a resolution that's 71% spending cuts.

Would doing this hurt the economy? Absolutely - for a while. Reality is, as a nation we've had it too easy for too long. It's time to pull together and - seriously - start chipping away at the debt we're leaving the generations ahead. It won't be easy, but I feel like it's time to pay for our collective fiscal mistakes, and get that deficit down to about half of what it is over the next 20 years.

They had a PLAN to make Obama a one-term President by manipulating the job numbers. Thankfully, the American people saw through that plan and voted Obama back into office anyway.
Now, Obama just has to find the right way to steamroller over Republican objections and get some laws PENALIZING companies for outsourcing to countries that don't have at least equal environmental protection laws to the United States, unless those companies adhere to American environmental protection standards even overseas.

The 'debt' that Obama had the nation take on was done by BIPARTISAN votes for things such as the bailout of GM and other companies.

Cynthia Newcomer

Wow, I'm kind of astounded by this conversation. Obama called a pimp and a socialist, talk of the 47% and their entitlement, people on welfare, etc. Obama is nowhere near a socialist. "Welfare" barely exists anymore -- it was decimated under President Clinton. CNN says "In the 16 years since President Clinton and Congress overhauled the nation's welfare system, the number of people receiving cash assistance has fallen by two-thirds. And public spending on the program has dropped by more than half." You wanna really talk welfare? Let's talk corporate welfare. Come on people, all but a very few of us are suffering. Let's stop the horizontal hostility and start directing it up to the corporate elites where it belongs.

I'm far to the left of President Obama, but I'm grateful for his leadership on pay equity, health care, and so much more. Just wait until the rest of the Affordable Care Act kicks in, I think all the naysayers will realize its value. The lifting of the pre-existing conditions exclusion is major. And already in effect is the provision that insurance companies can't cap people's lifetime benefits. That is a lifesaver for anyone who has a chronic or serious illness that requires ongoing care. How can anyone except the profiteers oppose that? For those of you who complain about "entitlement" programs, I suppose this means you'll never use social security or medicare? That you'll never be in a position to need food stamps or unemployment?

Agreed, Cynthia. I have some relatives on welfare and it is nowhere near being like it was in the 1980's. In order to draw welfare you have to work wherever they can get you a job or be sending out massive numbers of job applications every month, just like with unemployment.

You are also right about the corporate welfare. With 2/3rds of companies (even huge multinational companies with billion dollar profits) not paying any taxes or even getting money back from the federal government while their employees are on the social assistance programs..... we have a serious problem today.

To many conservatives however think that they will someday 'be rich' if they keep working themselves to exhaustion for their employer when the truth is that they will never be rich and they are being taken advantage of by their employer most times.

My insurance agent said by 2014 nobody will be able to afford Health Insurance. A cap needs to be put on Lawsuites I believe that is the majority of the health care cost besides working folks of course paying for the nonworking. 45% or more of the program's outlays within a seven-year period, which signals that Medicare is financially unsustainable. The President is required to respond to Congress, but
though the Medicare Trustees issued a warning in 2009, 2010, 2011, and again this past spring, Obama has ignored the law each year and failed to submit the required budgetary legislation to Congress.
But President Bush did so in 2008 and made the necessary budget adjustments.
President Obama could not have forgotten about this as Representative Ryan and Senator Sessions reminded him of his duties in a March 2012 letter.
Now President Obama will not comply with a federal law covered by the Regulatory Flexibility Act requiring him to release his regulatory agenda because he didn’t want
Americans voters to know the negative effect it will have on the economy when he wins re-election -- includes the loss of an estimated 887,000 jobs annually,
Obama has failed to comply with the law twice over the past year – specifically the April and October deadlines.
It now makes sense why he was re-elected -those that voted for him do not respect federal law as well.

Notice that the MD presidential vote was roughly 60-40 close to the DEM-GOP registration, but look at our representation in Congress: two democrat career politicians in the Senate and now 7 out 8 democrat representatives in the House because of MOM's grotesque gerrymandered election districts that ensure democrat tenure for the same deadwood. MOM and his cohorts are already probably plotting how to steal the remaining seat to turn MD into an even bluer state. And yet the same folks are re-elected year after year. Just makes no sense at all.

My great grandfather was French, immigrated to this country and became an American.

Unemployment was much higher between 1929-1938... As a percentage of population, and actual number of unemployed.

The President has NOTHING to do with gas prices. You want cheap gas? Don't teach the Chinese, Africans, or Indians to drive. It's supply and demand, and unfortunatly, there really is a limited amount of refining capacity, even if there was some excess crude production capacity.

Yes, he wants to raise some taxes. You can't cut simply cut sending, to attempt to fix our problems. But, if he raises taxes on those making 1 million a year or more, how does that affect you? Heck, it doesn't affect me at all.

Romney did that himself. In trying to win the nomination, he had to appease the nutbag far right, in the primaries. How many times did he and Mr Ryan evade, backslid, flip flop, or flat out lie on a position?

Jeep sending all jobs to China? Lie
Anti Abortion in all cases? Yes, then, Nope not me...
Being either misinformed or just pandering to old, rich, white donors, by actually saying what he thinks, (or worse, just what they want to hear), with the 47% remarks.

As a Party, the Republicans and Mr Romney went about ignoring, or insulting the fastest growing demographics. (Hispanic Americans, Black Americans, and single Women) While counting on white males to carry them. Sorry, but that dog won't hunt anymore.

While Republicans mostly held onto congressional seats, for now, (where local is more important, and you can get away with being a nutbag fascist.. See Michele Bachmann...), on a state wide, or national level, they got their butts kicked.

Akin, Mourdock, Smith, Burg... and 5 other right wing nutbags all lost Senate races. Really? North Dakota elected a Democrat for anything? Just how bad was their guy? Must have been awful...lol

The more I look into it I can't help but laugh at the irony in the legalization of gay marriage. They want it to be "equal" so they can enjoy the benefits of marriage like the rest of us yet I am wondering what is really the benefit of being married? My wife is a stay at home mom so she has no income. If we got divorced she would have 2 children and no income so she would qualify for Government assistance food stamps, WIC, etc. if she claimed I was gone and a "deadbeat dad". I could still live in the house and our lives would be no different other than on paper we would be divorced. We could live the same life we're living now with my income plus get all the Governement benefits which would leave us with a lot more cash for us to enjoy. I have friends that do this now though they never got married, when I ask why they don't get married she says because she would lose her benefits. I once saw a documentary on polygamist and this is the scam some of them run. Legally you can only be married to one so their other wives and children are viewed as unmarried by the Government and all recieve Government assistance. They refer to the practice as "bleeding the beast" with the beast being the US Government and tax payers. At the time I thought this was a terrible thing to do but I am starting to see it from their point of view, if you can get it why wouldn't you? So please tell me why anyone should get married?

I don't like people who claim to be Americans attacking our military especially when they give up their lives for us and as to your comment about, " Or that was the life of another grunt,". That is someone's child. Why aren't your dinging dirt down at Charles St. at the water main. Oh that's right entitlements.

That' is why you and illiterates like Steve are destroying this nation and it's too late to save it. The cancer is our of control.

As for Steve you I'll pull out my paper work on you and see you in court for slander if you use that "draft dodger," word one more time without prof. Why don't you ask the county how I've done? One more line of slander and I'm chomping at the bit to expose you for what your are. This time it's for real no more games. With the oher files and what you said as Steve I should have another great day.

Old man you make me laugh calling someone else "illiterate".

Get real, pal. Being in the military is a job that the dark, imperialist side of America pays for. It is a good living for people who have an inherited stake in it or who are for one reason or another willing to take a dangerous job with travel perks. Really talented people make a decent living doing it and anyone who can hack it can take the option of double-dipping beginning at at relatively young age.

The day of the citizen-soldier who saved the country is over, Buzzy-boy. Were you asleep somewhere when the switch-over to mercenary military happened? Were you pissed and had a twenty year black-out?

Steve, by the way is a free-thinking patriot and a fine American. If you take him to court, he may wind up owning your house. What county? I thought this was a cosmopolitan chatroom.

Perhaps the FOX viewers should get their information from more than one source. When a 34 year old author and statistician can accurately know the pulse of America and predict every single race in the United States except one using math, it's time to let go of the fantasies of Karl Rove.

Best line of the election coverage- "Is this just math that you do as a republican to make yourself feel better or is this real?"- Megyn Kelly - FOX News to Karl Rove

Watching the Faux News coverage of the election was like watching Baghdad Bob all over again.

Frank, I just flagged your comment also. Trust me this will stop.

Your're proud of this. Is this what lies ahead for our country, you and Steve.

You violate the terms of use and I'll flag it. It they won't act I forward it on up the chain.

By the way, you ever stop and think that repairing a broken water main that disrupts a large part of the city is not important work if that is what you did?

Your comments will drive away others and Patch's numbers will take a hit and people will go elsewhere. You see you have become the same people over and over with the mouth and people will get sick of it and stop reading it.

Other sites will take over because people will not have to fear being called perverts of draft dodgers among other things. It's a number game.

Bryant, Tony K-12-005969 09:15AM Cavanaugh Courtroom 3 - 3rd Floor

That answer your question. You ever accuse me of committing a crime again without prof and I will turn out the lights in your basement. That will expose you and your lies via subpenas and Steve will be done.

Right now people like you are bad for Patch because you negatively impact the numbers and that's not good business, Frank and Steve aren't enough to pay the bills.

......and that has absolutely nothing to do with you or your Blag (SP?).

Is that why the people in the courthouse all snicker behind your back when you show up??

That's easy to understand. Rove started searching himself asking "How would I do that?" and landed on one of his own dirty tricks.

He man, you wouldn't last three minutes in Gold's. At least I have clothes to wear. Remember Brando who made the tee shirt popular not stockings.

Sorry Frank you're wrong. Draft dodging was a crime and if you were charged it appeared on your record. I was a cop and never charged with a crime. You have heard of libel haven't you?

Speaking of cowards are you afraid, scared or just a wimp to use your last name? Come on tough guy lets hear what a man or what ever Frank is? Are you hiding something other than your a coward?

You're quote; "You used a fake name when you were drafted, Buzzard?"
You think they call that fraud. I know more than you think.

I notified the editor and if she doesn't want to do her job I can go to the top!

Some food for thought. Seems my first choice for President was the one Obama's campaign manager feared the most, all along.
