Bites Nearby: McGinty's Public House
You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Silver Spring Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice.
Think you have to trek into the city to find a decent Irish pub? Think again. Although McGinty's Public House in Silver Spring is located in the downtown shopping district and not sporting an aged stone front, it offers traditional food and ambiance.
McGinty's also functions as pubs in Ireland do -- as centers of public entertainment and music. Any night of the week you will find large groups celebrating and bands playing. McGinty's even draws big acts from Ireland like Bagatelle and U2 (well, the U2 tribute band 2U, at least). Events like the upcoming Guinness and Oyster Festival on October 9th again contribute to the heartbeat-of-the-community feel.
The traditional Irish pub menu is also a big draw. Fish and chips, bangers and mash, Irish boxty (a flavorful potato cake) and Irish soups like onion and potato shine. Local grill favorites like the crab cakes, steaks and burgers are excellent as well.
Choose from several locations in the large restaurant to savor your meal: the downstairs pub, upstairs fancy-schmancy dining room with roaring fireplace, or larger upstairs bar where the performance/dance floor is located. All are great venues to sip your Guinness or Irish coffee.
