People gather outside Perry Hall High School after a shooting Monday morning. One student shot another, police said. The victim is in serious condition.
Emily Guilta, a ninth grade student, said she witnessed the Perry Hall High School shooting.

BALTIMORE, MD -- UPDATED (4:19 p.m.)—A 15-year-old student shot a 17-year-old classmate at Perry Hall High School on Monday, the first day of the Baltimore County school year, officials said.

A guidance counselor at the school "heroically" stopped the attack by grabbing the shooter, police said.

Baltimore County police said in a news release that the student who had been shot was transported by helicopter to a local hospital.

Police Chief Jim Johnson said that the shooter is in custody and being interviewed at police headquarters.

"I have a freshman who just started school today. She was scared to death to start high school anyway. She said, 'I want to go back to middle school.' She was really emotional this morning. Now she's saying, 'I'm not going back in that school,'" said Carol Erpenstein. She and her daughter Sarah become emotional after they were reunited along Ebenezer Road near Perry Hall Middle School.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said a 15-year-old gunman "randomly picked" a 17-year-old student and shot him in the back. The student is in critical condition after being flown to shock trauma.

A school resource officer was present, and two teachers were able to overpower the gunman, Kamenetz said.

“We live in a very difficult time and I was hopeful that Baltimore county was immune to these types of things, but apparently that is not the case,” Kamenetz told Patch in a phone interview from the school.

Students were released from school early in the afternoon. They were escorted to Perry Hall Square Shopping Center at the corner of Ebenezer and Belair roads, and then to the athletic fields behind Perry Hall Middle School, where they boarded buses. Ebenezer Road had been closed to traffic.

"The teachers know more than the students do," said a teacher who declined to be identified. "We only know what we've been told."

Perry Hall High School will be open Tuesday, Baltimore County Public Schools officials told Patch.

In an afternoon news briefing, Johnson said that reports at this time indicate that the shooter walked into the cafeteria with a concealed weapon and shot the victim. A teacher "heroically stepped in" to stop the attack, at which time the suspect fired another shot into the air. A police officer on the scene then arrested the suspect. Police have recovered the weapon but are not releasing information about the nature of the weapon at this time.

Johnson called the incident a "random act of violence, involving a single shooter acting alone."

» MORE: See video from the scene and read student reaction.

Kamenetz had been traveling the county Monday with new county schools Superintendent S. Dallas Dance. The traveling party was alerted to the incident by staff while visiting Woodlawn High School

"My personal thoughts right now are clear; my heart, my thoughts, my prayers are going out with the student who was injured and his family right now," Dance said.

In an email update Monday afternoon, police said, "Several other students suffered minor, non-shooting injuries during the incident."

The school—the largest high school among Baltimore County Public Schools with approximately 2,200 students—is located at 4601 Ebenezer Road.

Teachers were taken back to the school to get their belongings.

"The teachers know more than the students do," said a teacher who
declined to be identified. "We only know what we've been told."

Monday marked the first day for public school systems around the state.

In a statement, Gov. Martin O'Malley said: "Today, on this first day of school for many students in our State, we’ve suffered a senseless act of violence. I’d like to thank the teachers and administrators for their courageous and life-saving actions. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the injured student and his family.

"I’ve spoken with County Executive Kamenetz, and we will continue to support all of our local partners in Baltimore County. It takes all of us working together to make our schools safer for our children."

Lillian Lowery, Maryland State Schools Superintendent was finishing lunch with first graders at Georgetown East Elementary School in Annapolis when she learned about the shooting from a reporter.

"We send our students to school to be safe and this is a horrible way to start a school year," Lowery said.

Lowery sent her blessings to the person who was injured, and said she takes comfort knowing the counseling services at the school will be adequate for those who need it.

A prayer service has been set up for 7 p.m. at Saint Michael Lutheran Church.

Congressman C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger said: "The first day of school is supposed to be a day of reunion after a fun summer and anticipation for the year ahead. No parent should have to worry about the safety of their child at school. I appreciate the rapid response to the situation by the staff and administrators at Perry Hall High School as well as Baltimore County’s law enforcement and first responders, who quickly evacuated the victim and apprehended the suspect. My thoughts and prayers are with the students and staff of Perry Hall High School as well as their families."

Baltimore County Councilman David Marks said the incident was handled as well as could be expected.

"I walked here from my house, and everything I've observed has been calm and orderly," Marks said. "The police are doing the best job they can. There are a lot of parents who are justifiably concerned but everyone is taking the most care they can.

"This is clearly an aberration," Marks said. "This is a safe, stable school and nothing like this has ever happened before ... hopefully it won't ever happen again."

Patch even beat WBAL and the rest of prime time news.

It was just reported that the victim was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the back.

This could happen at any school, public or private. This was a result of a poor decision by a child not a bad school. Until private schools put up metal detectors and have police officers, they are no safer than public schools.

Comment_arrow

Tim

I went to both public and private/Catholic school growing up.
Not only could this happen in a private school, but you have other very real risks with private school. Risks such as - inferior teachers and materials.

Private schools are a good option if you don't live in a good area. For example, if we lived in Overlea, you better believe I wouldn't be sending my kid to Overlea HS.
You get positives and negatives from private schools. Negative being inferior teachers (and ridiculous amounts of money), positive generally being class sizes.

Home schooling? seriously, very few families could adequately pull it off. It implies a parent is actually scholarly enough to do so. Please- let's be serious here.

Our kids can't live in a bubble forever. We just had our kid at the bus stop for kindergarten this morning, and sure enough one of the other parents was chain smoking. In front of the kids. It's this type of stupid, inconsideration that is rampant in our society today. That's the problem. The fact I even have to ask her not to smoke is effing ridiculous.

All I see in this thread is a bunch of fear-mongering over one event. When was the last time there was a shooting at Perry Hall High School? How long has it been?

Bullying will always exist. It existed when we grew up. Facebook and social media has got to be exacerbating it though. I have no intention of letting my kid have an account until at least 16 but even this won't completely insulate him from it. Kids talk.

Tim's comments about backhanded slaps at private school is totally uncalled for, this or any day. Especially this day. He can't be too bright and I wouldn't want him running anything. Parents of Private School have great sacrifice for their children, of all age, elementary, high school and college. The benefit is much more than Tim could ever know. Is this a record for the amount of random, senseless, shootings in a year?
Colorodo "Batman" Premier, Siek Temple,Oikos University Shooting, the Chicago Shootings, Empire State Building, Perry High. There is no "safe" area. Home Schooling, sure.. that makes them safe for the time being, but unless you spend the rest of your life in a bullet proof bubble, you can't escape the rest of the nut cases out there... and even if everyone carried guns, most of these could not have been prevented. I am really starting to lean toward much stricter gun control.

Kids get angry these days more and more with the smallest little things. They react to the anger and do crazy things, such as shooting someone. In this incident, let's remember the lesson and work harder on being friends and not bully's with people. Let's also teach our kids how to handle provoking matters in a calm way instead of letting them react the way they want to - which can cause serious if not fatal problems.

Okay, here we go--the issues are bullying and gun control.
Bullying should have clear definitions as to what bullying is and should become an offense in the eyes of the law.
The selling of guns should be more closely monitored. Parents who have guns in their homes should also be held accountable when their children get hold of the guns.

Maryland gun laws are something you need to learn. Parents CAN be held liable. Firearm sales ARE closely monitored in this state that denies us our civil rights.
Kids KNOW what bullying is. They need to be stood up to, not shot.

Joe:
I was not insinuating that bullies should be shot. However, if you beat a bully to death and kill him/her with hands/fists, what's the difference? You are correct, bullies need to be stood up to--but by strict policy by the schools, law enforcement, and parents. Suppose the bully has a gun? How you gonna stand up to that? Some bullies are unstoppable. In the past, school personnel did not hold bullying as a strict, punishable offense and neither do some parents. I had a confrontation w/the parent of a bully when my son was a teen, and the parent was just as bad. Although you are correct in that I need to become more educated about gun laws, common sense tells me that guns/firearms are not monitored closely enough.

Without further information on how and where the firearm was gained, the rest is speculation.

BCPS Policy 5580: Students: Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation in response to the Safe Schools Reporting Act of 2005. Check it out. If I recall correctly Maryland has some of the most specific legislation regarding bullying. http://www.stopbullying.gov/laws/maryland.html However, lets face it, you can't legislate healthy families, growth and development and relationships. Bullying as well as violence is complex and not boiled down to gun control or any one type of legislation. Rarely does anything boil down to one or two factors.

I am only relaying what the 13 is reporting live. Even 13 said no none from the police PIO has made any announcement. I would think going back to the Palcynski case they would have as Bill Tooehy was the PIO, someone on scene to provide some details.

I realize Patch reporter's on the scene have their hands full on gathering information live from the scene. Actual I think Patch will be more thorough because of the many Patch readers who were there.

WjZ just confirmed that the shooter was a student at the school. Back in my days if you were on the scene and knew anything you were not allowed to say anything, only the PIO.

Bryan I know, and everything is speculation at this point. I posted comments based on WJZ for several reasons. They were live and I felt that the Patch readers who did not have access to what we were watching at least would have some knowledge about the incident. I also felt it was the only way to release some news to the readers without citing some source that did not include an official news organization.

I also felt the readers who may not have been aware of the ongoing news may have some more insight. It was he only way to be there without being there and the sources were cited.

If the information was not accurate it was reported by 13 and not by Patch.

My thoughts and prayers to the student who is injured and all the others that are affected emotionally by this. But there are questions I ask when things like this happen, how is it kids seem to get their hands on weapons to do these acts of violence? Also is our access to excessive media covering for things like shootings cause more of them to happen more frequently? I know with the economy its tough to always be around as parents, but how do you not know your child left for school on the first day with a weapon? And with all the shootings that have been happening in schools in the last 10+ years how do these schools not all have metal detectors?

"how is it kids seem to get their hands on weapons to do these acts of violence?"
How many answers do you want?

Some parents actually train their children about forearms and take them shooting often. Those parents allow their children access to firearms at home for the same reason the parent has them in the home, protection.

Some parents have forearms but do not train their children in their use and never take them shooting which makes the forearm a curiosity. The kids that shoot often do not see the firearms as a curiosity and rarely use one for a purpose other than protection or practice.

some parents have firearms in the home and just don't think about their kids taking then for evil purposes.

Some parents have them and just don't give a hoot about them or their kids.
There are more but you get the point.

Please do not forget another possibility: The parents did not have the firearm and the teenager acquired it elsewhere, including illegal channels. There are no monitors on person-to-person longarm sales in Maryland (or surrounding states); all it takes is an unscrupulous seller and a minor has a weapon.

I have lived in Perry Hall for the past 27 years and it is my opinion that Perry Hall High School was a great place to attend school UNTIL they started busing students from other areas into the Perry Hall School system. My Son attended Perry Hall HS during that time and it was there at the HS that my Son learned racism, he sure as heck didn't learn it in our Home! The things he told me that were allowed to go on in that School made my skin craw, of course he informed me of this after he was no longer in School. He's been out of the HS for 6 years now.
They really should take a good look at the issue of busing other students into this area.

Mr. Fred and Ms. Jackie, For your information I am not a racist now nor have I ever been. I was born and raised in Baltimore City, in a neighborhood called "Pigtown" to be exact. A neighborhood that I do not fear to walk down the streets of today but one that I'm sure Mr. Fred and Ms. Jackie you would probably hesitate to drive through without making sure your car doors were locked.
Although my son was born and raised in Perry Hall he accompanied me back to my Parents House, in "Pigtown", every Sunday. There he attended Church and Sunday School for 16 years.
My Son did not LEARN racism in our home, nor was he TAUGHT racism in our home. He never had a problem with anyone who was different than him in anyway, nor did I ever have a problem with "Busing" less fortunate children into neighborhoods that were more fortunate. My Son's problems with racism BEGAN at PHHS. And yes, now I will say I do have a problem with "Busing" but I didn't have this problem until the ugly results of it's outcome reared it's ugly head into My Life!! Oh and BTW, it was not just my Son who came out of PHHS like this, it was also many other Male and Female's throughout the neighboorhood.
So, there you go Mr and Ms Holier Than Thou.

@ Jackie ~ Perhaps you should re-read and 'comprehend' my comment. I was responding to Freds accusation that my Son's racism was 'learned' at home and your comment stating that hating people who are different is 'taught'....YOUR chosen word for which I reused, not mine.
I did not once say that my Son was 'TAUGHT' racism at PHHS, I said his problems with rasim BEGAN at PHHS. His opinions stem from his own personal experience of what he witnessed between the different races of students a PHHS.
I also keep my car doors locked at all times and my statement assumed that you may as well but you would 'make sure' they were locked before traveling through a neighborhood that I would freely walk through with no problem.
I am offended by people like you who choose to take the written word as you see fit instead of comprehending it in it's entirety.

I keep seeing metal detectors pop up. While on the surface it seems like a good idea can you imagine the uproar when a child has to be patted down and searched? Can you imagine the amount of time it would take for each student to go through a metal detector. Shoes, backpacks, jewlery etc can all set off a metal detector. Its a can of worms. Never will happen. Not to mention the cost of it to happen, upkeep, hire trained people, etc.

people need to understand that this community was originally a farming community. it’s a older school with old mechanics. It has been expanded, yes. It has been updated here and there, yes. But something like this is no one’s fault at the school.. the fault is one of the shooters. He made the choice to do what he did. Yes he made it into the school with a gun, but we are not in an area that guns are suspected and metal detectors were needed (before today). If you want to look for someone to blame, blame the shooter. Not the school, not the other students, not the teachers. Perry Hall High School is a fantastic school, and its sad that this happen.

Hell, even Obama did not trust people with forks and knives at a fund raiser he had at a luncheon.
"However, at one such lunch Friday afternoon, guests heard an unusual announcement that they needed to hand over their silverware for security reasons.

“It’s very important that you use your utensils as soon as possible,” National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials board member Raquel Regalado told about 1000 delegates at the group’s annual conference.

Regalado hurried the diners to finish up their salads and pre-cut chicken breasts, saying that the Secret Service required that there be no knives at the tables and that the forks be rounded up before Obama entered the room.

“As you know, we’re having another speaker and there is some Secret Service involved. So there’s a reason why there’s no knives at your table and the forks will be collected. ... And I’m not joking,” Regalado told the audience in a ballroom at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. “So, like the good Hispanic mother I’m here to tell you to please, eat your lunch.”

A Secret Service spokesman confirmed that the agency made the request, but said such requirements are common at large events where the president speaks at about the same time people are dining."

A teacher was able to stop the 15 year from shooting anyone else but the gun did go off one more time. The injured student is a 17 year old male student that was taken to shock trauma and is now listed as serious condition.
Here is a big problem: How did this 15 year old get the gun in the school? Why weren't the parents of the 15b year old doing something? They had to of know he has serious issues. The comment on FB is correct and you can't finish it or your comment will be kicked off due to language.

This kind of thing wasn't around when I was in high school. You really have to blame our sick society because the media glorifies this kind of thing...whenever shootings occur it is ALL over the news constantly and by giving all that attention to it, it probably encourages crazy people to be violent for attention or encourages young people (who, lets face it, don't think correctly at times)- who might be going through bullying or other problems to take the matter into their own hands. Off course the news should cover it, but the media , whenever there are mass shootings, covers it for days and days and days, over and over and over. It does glorify it . Forensic psychologists and criminologists have warned that excessive media attention reinforces attention seeking killers, in their sick mind -- they will die famous. I do think the media plays a role and the extensive coverage of these type of shootings fuel the likelihood of the next school shooting.

Just some information for those who wish to use demographics to determine causality of this tragedy (which is almost always a fallacy to do):

Perry Hall High School has positive ratings from various sites. (4 out of 5 from SchoolDigger, 8 out of 10 from GreatSchool, etc.)

Perry Hall High School demographics are ~69% White, ~19% Black, ~10% Asian, and ~2% Hispanic.

Perry Hall (town) has similar demographics, with more White population and less minorities. ~33% of all families have minors living with them. Only 2.3% of the population was below the poverty line; the median household income was estimated up to ~$75k.

So, it's bad enough to spout bigoted remarks... but to apply them to this situation is even more ignorant.

Tom C. in regards to your comment, The US Marshalls are probally on a task force with either Balto Co or MSP and thats why they were on scene. Everyone can talk to each other by switching radio channels. After the Columbine HS case most agencies are trained the same way for active shooter, so the more LEO's the better to take the threat out. In some cases as a school this large as PHHS they would need to check for other things left behind by the suspect. So K9's would be called in, and other agencies no matter what jurisdiction they have would assist Balto Co PD through a mutual aid agreement because one K9 can't search the whole building. Jurisdiction goes out the window when it comes to children. PHHS '96 Graduate, Current LEO.

Let's say this incident is no one person's fault--it has nothing to do with having access to a firearm, nor does it have anything to do w/bullying. Let's say the parents of these teens are respectable people who pay a lot of attention to their teens and try to pass along good morals. Let's say the high school personnel have done everything they can to try and prevent something like this from happening. So, we're simply down to two teens making bad decisions??? Somehow, it doesn't seem that simple. If there isn't anyone or anything to blame, why are these types of events taking place in areas we consider safe and more often, and by those who are very young and not likely suspects?

Its so sad to see where society is today. I used to be able to go to bed at night with my doors unlocked and this just isn't a time where you can do that any more. I don't necessarily think you meant it, but "never on prozac" shouldn't be equated to "never broke the law" as if they are equally bad. I agree that there can be over-medication, but there can be legitimate reasons for a child to be on medication. My wife and I have two kids. If you saw one, you'd say we are perfect parents. If you saw the other, you'd say we were terrible parents. We have worked day-in and day-out for years with teachers, coaches, administrators, counselors, advocates, and professionals to try to work through the latter one's issues. I'm glad you had success in raising your 4 kids without medication, but unless you are with a family 24 hours a day or have a large amount of information, it's better to reserve judgement on what is appropriate for others.

I know both the shooter and the victim. They both went to a local small public elementary school. The shooter has been a trouble maker even in elementary school. Why would any parent let there small child walk around with long chains hanging off their pants in elementary school. His parents are to blame they never had any control over him. It is a shame that an innocent special needs kids had to get shot, very sweet boy. Maybe parents need to start looking at the way their kids act and dress. Look at his facebook page scary kids. I subbed at the school and he was a nightmare child way back in elementary school. His parents need to be held responsible too.

There's usually some history with these sorts of things, like: "They were a quiet family, kept to themselves". Lord, spare me.
This one has been trouble since elementary school? Whew!
So very, very sad.

Yea I heard exactly the same as you stated. I spoke with three Perry Hall students that work at a local restaurant around 4pm. They all were very close to the shooting and saw it all.
All three of those students said they knew this for many years growing up. They all agreed that he was "always a scarey individual saying strange and delusional things all the time. He was never bullied, but he chose to not be friends or friendly to anyone. Many students reached out to him being friendly and he would always ignore them or say something rude".
Yes, they also said he was Goth and he played it up to scare people.

When my younger son started to wear all black and act weird, I went, in person, to his high school. I worked with his guidance counselor and she suggested private counseling. We attended twice weekly counseling sessions for over a year, even though my son said he hated every minute of counseling. The point is the teachers and guidance counselors kept an eye on my son along with myself. We were all proactive, so my son didn't have a chance to do something bad. After a year, he returned to being a normal student. I feel my early intervention, his high school and private counseling stopped an unwanted behavior.

He had a two piece sawed off. It was taken apart and put In his backpack. He told his friends to get out of the cafeteria saying "I have 21 shells. 20 for this place and 1 for me." he went to the bathroom and assembled his weapon. Came out. Stood at the vending machines, aimed and fired his weapon. That's exactly what happened. 4 kids knew about it before it happened and didn't say a word about it.

Kudos to the school and admin for doing a geat job managing an unbelievable situation. To implement an emergency lockdown and evacuation of 2000+ kids is incredible especially on the first day back. My kids were in the building and felt safe, although anxious, throughout the event. I do hope the system learns from the event. Kids are allowed to carry backpacks in the school due to a locker shortage which to me is a huge red flag. Hallways and stairs are overcrowded which adds to potentially unsafe conditions. Hopefully BCPS can move forward and continue to work towards a safe environment for all. I don't think today could have been avoided and I'm greatful things didn't turn out worse.

AzureSkye,

Thank you for your reply. I re-read my reply and it may sound harsher than it meant. I know nothing directly about this situation so I'm not going to comment specifically on this tragedy, but I do agree that in general communication is a key element. Some kids can be very, very difficult to reach. I salute the educators and others who are able to do so.

I did mean that I was happy for you that you made it through raising four kids successfully as there really are no "easy" children--just some that are less difficult than others.

Aaron, who really believes that a good friend, a close friend, a brother, whatever, would actually go and do such a thing you may have heard them ramble about one night or 2? We have all heard friends etc say really stupid things. as our friends have heard us say. But to act on them is another level. We just do not think our own, otherwise well behaved, well reared responsible children are capable of such a thing. I have had a close friend commit suicide. I never would have thunkit as they say. She had every thing going for her. Nobody saw it. Sad. People do not want to talk to any one any more because as you see on these blogs, people are cruel and mean and hateful. Dealing with that all your life is inconceivable.

What a way to start the school year. If you know a teacher (or guidance counselor!) please let them know how much you appreciate their hard work in an often hostile environment. I hope the rest of the students are able to continue on with a peaceful year. I can't say I didn't think about this happening when I dropped my boy off for his first day of high school today.

you want to hear something crazy, 3 yrs ago a student at my daughters middle school tried to stab her . luckey her friend moved her she went running screamimg for a teacher and a police officer. the teacher threw him down and waited for police which were already there for a break in the night b4. he tried to kill himself but only wounded himself. 3 yrs later he is now in the same school as my daughter. i do not understand the school system and why he is allowed back. so as her mother i took off work tomorrow so i can have a talk with the principle and the police officer as well. i do not and will not have anything happen to my daughter. when all that happened the school at the time kept it very quite. i didnt even get a call to come to school. she was calling me. the police had her in a closed room asking her questions. not cool.
as for the parry hall kid, i hope he gets all the he needs. he seems to be very sad angry child that needs help. his parents i feel bad for cause you do not know his home situation and they may never even seen him angry or sad. they need prayers as well.i hope all the ids can get back to school and try to look past this and have a great yr.

You daughter must be freaking out knowing someone who attempted to stab her is in her school. As a parent I know I would be out of my mind. I don't understand why they returned the kid to regular school. Did he go to counseling ? Get some kind of treatment ? I think there is a lot of stuff brushed under the rug where the schools are concerned. They do not want to develop a reputation based on one child's action. The only problem is, how many times will a school attempt to do hide the problems.

Is bullying the cause? It might be a motivating factor but it is not the root problem. My experience is that school staff generally does not address bulling problems until they become violent but this off topic.
The root problem is a cultural where it is comprehensible to shoot a classmate -- a problem non-existent in the '50's when in many parts of the country it was normal to bring your bee-bee gun to school with you without it being alarming. I recall the first shooting at Perry Hall High School in/around '93 that happened after school during a football game (yes -- this is not the first school shooting at Perry Hall -- just first during school hours), by a new student after they started bringing students from Middle River and other communities. Immediately there was a huge spike in drug problems and that shooting was related to drugs.
Absolutely, the expansion of the overcrowded high school's pooling area has had negative consequences. This sounds terrible but it is true.
I am very curious -- maybe a student can tell me -- if drug use/dealing is still commonplace at Perry Hall High?

Hey Jed, let me ask you a question? You are accusing me of adding confusing accounts of what what was taking place in a live fluid situation, correct? You say I should know better. Better than who? You? What are your credentials? What is your background in journalism?

Patch readers were providing information in the same manor I was.

In a situation such as this one unfolded you gather the news through a variety of sources; witnesses, police officers, FD personnel, and other new organizations. Nothing can be confirmed until the authorities conclude their investigation. What are the readers going to discuss without any information being provided?

Information is confirmed after the investigation is complete.

I got into the situation early and commented what was taking place live based on a reputable and I repeat reputable, news organization. I cited the source and that the information was not confirmed. Other information was provided by Patch readers which is exactly how this site is supposed to work.

I worked for the Baltimore News American and freelanced for the Baltimore Sun probably before you were born. If you have experience in this area than please list your credentials accurately.

Here are some of mine:

Just look at his first sentence or lack thereof, - That's a clown question Bro" (sic) He ends it with a quotation mark and no period.

His other remark is just as poorly written as this will reveal.

"LOl No you weren't. You were pretending to be a reporter, but everybody figured out you were just parroting a real Reporter's news reports. " (sic)

He's missing a capital letter, a coma, capitalizing "No" and "Reporter's" should be small case.

None of this has anything to do with the shooting.

If your want to comment I would suggest go to the story on the victim of the shooting and support him instead of this mess.

A real police! Is moe green as real person? Don't think so. Bully pulpit! Who's the one being bullied?

I was a traffic cop during my 39 year career. I'm not running for office. Looks like you and Steve know each other, or you're part of the east side political machine.

@ NK..thank you for your response..and I never once after reading your reply thought you were being harsh. As a parent I fully understand what you must be going through and my heart goes out to you and your family. Wishing you all the best.! As for others that suggested that, I was arrogant and or bragging ? Never once did I say that any of Our children were perfect and I never said I was a perfect parent either. Raising children is the biggest challenge ever but... if I can say that, Our children ( whom are all grown & married with children ) never had any serious problems..then yes I am darn proud of that and wont apologize for it either.

The blame does not go to the Patch editors unless there is foul language or threats used and then the post should not go through. People have to "flag as inappropriate" any post they are concerned about.
What is wrong with some of you? A 17 year old boy got shot by a 15 year old boy in a school cafeteria the first day of school. Students, teachers, staff, parents, alumni, neighbors, friends are upset and a couple of you go on and on acting like two year olds having temper tantrums. Thank you to the people who are truely posting about this story. Thankful that Daniel is awake and he can move his fingers and toes. Still praying for him and his family and everyone who suffered, there is a lot of healing that needs to be done.

Jeanne, where did you find information about Daniel's current condition? All I've read is that he's still in critical condition.

Allison, a friend of the family put up a facebook page "Prayers for Daniel" and they give an update when they get one. It is wonderful news that he is awake and can move his fingers and toes but he still has a long road ahead of him. There is also another facebook page "Lady Gaga please visit Daniel" that they might put updates on.

I'm with Jeanne.....PP Poo? What does that even mean? How old are they? Like I have said before.....idiots making it about themselves when this post is about a 17 year old in critical condition first and foremost.

This blog will not change a thing about the tragic situation one way or the other... It's like rubberneckers practically stopping at a serious car accident to see the wreckage, and maybe a little blood....nothing more, nothing less.. won't make a bad situation any better..it's called sad reality of today's society. Best we can do, is to be the best that we can as individuals. Gun control won't stop it, metal detectors are not feasible for many reasons and posting about it on Patch as though it were the sacred site of all good things certainly won't make it any better. Thoughts and prayers are personal and can be offered from within, from the heart, and if there is a god they will be received as such with or without posting them on a blog. This is not the holier than everyone else blog...it's just Patch.

Jed, I don't consider your comments an attack. They were well articulated and civil.

Let me explain. We are in the world of instant news. Where do we get it from, I phones, live coverage and on and on. Patch is a news organization competing with others for readers.

First, yes you can wait for all of the facts to be confirmed and miss the entire story

In the old days you would wake up and read the papers or watch the Six o'clock news. Not any more.

I read and watch news almost 24/7 thus the phrases like, "Eyewitness News", along with "Live and Late Breaking."

If you wait for for all the i's to be dotted and the t's to be crossed in today's world your news organization will not survive.

If you go back and read the comments from the readers of Patch you will the wide range of information coming forth, including one on the misinformation on the condition of the victim.

I relayed what was taking place by a reputable, professional news organization period. If what I did was wrong they why not shut down all comments on Patch until the investigation is complete.

When there is a fatal car crash the news reports it with the information the police are conducting and investigation.

Any news organization does not have the luxury to sit back and verify every detail and survive in today's I-Phone era.

WJZ is a professional news organization.

Just look at the coverage in the Mid East.

Several things the media said Monday were wrong and should not have been said to fill air time. This was never about bullying but bullying is a big problem we can solve with our words and actions. When I was at the school tuesday morning for the Prayer for Perry Hall and was very upset to see two media stations setting up cameras blocking the students from walking on the sidewalk without them getting them on film. They weren't into the school property they were at the two corners. I did notice three other medias, ABC one of them, that set up on the sidewalk by the road were students weren't walking filming from a respectable distance. I called one of the stations yesturday and thanked them for respecting the students, staff, and parents. Please continue to pray for Daniel's full recovery and that not only his family but all the famlies affected feel strength.

'I relayed what was taking place by a reputable, professional news organization period."

If anybody wanted to know what WJZ was reporting they could have just clicked on the WJZ live stream on their website instead of coming over to Patch and reading what some wannabe reporter had to say.
