Breast-Feeding Booth Educates Public About the Law

The educational booth is a part of a series.

La Leche League leaders, an international non-profit that encourages mothers who want to breast-feed, set up their educational booth near the fountain in downtown Silver Spring on Saturday to bring awareness to the issue.

After a recent public breast-feeding incident captured the attention of many local mothers, the downtown Silver Spring management company launched a program to educate their customers and staff about breast-feeding.

The effort outlined steps that Peterson Companies’ management are implementing, including, educating its staff about the law, handing out copies of the breast-feeding law, and requiring security guards to carry copies of the law.

Alice Crawford, La Leche League Leader in Silver Spring, said that overall the event went great and about 10 people stopped by to either talk to them or grab informational pamphlets.

"People stopped by to ask general breast-feeding questions and they were also glad to see us out there," said Crawford.

The next educational booth is scheduled for the same location on Thursday, Aug. 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

When my kids were babies, my wife was a member of La Leche League. I support its activities and the Maryland law permitting public breast feeding. Too many people try to sexualize the practice. It's not about sex; it's about feeding a baby--as natural and innocent as you can get--and promotes bonding between mother and child. Your article doesn't mention the location of the booth.

This cracks me up! So much talk about breasts! I'm pretty prudish myself, but even if I weren't, once I saw a woman basically bare breasted nursing a tiny tot while sidled up to a bar I just threw the whole breastfeeding in public baby out with the bathwater. Cover that up without suffocating the kid. I know anyone smart enough to be a mom is smart enough to figure out how to do that. ;-) Great story!
