A pedestrian struck and killed by a car Tuesday, Jan.22, near Orchard Center has been identified as Georgina Afful-Asare, 54, of the Briggs Chaney neighborhood of Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County police.

Afful-Asare was hit by a 2002 maroon Mitsubishi Montero as she walked on a sidewalk on Broadbirch Drive, police said. She was taken to Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she died of her injuries. 

Police said they are investigating why the driver steered her vehicle onto the curb, across the grass and eventually along the sidewalk.

The driver, Jane W. Ndungu Maranga, 53, of Beltsville, was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
