Riemer: Clinton Will 'Light This Place on Fire'

Montgomery County Councilmember and DNC regular Hans Riemer is in Charlotte this week.

Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer is in Charlotte this week for the Democratic National Convention. This is the Silver Spring resident's fifth DNC, and he was fired up to hear Bill Clinton speak. Patch spoke to him on the street on Wednesday, which happened to be his 40th birthday.

How are you celebrating your birthday?

My wife's here, and first we’re going to watch Bill Clinton speak, and I think Bill Clinton is going to light this place on fire. I’ve been going to conventions since 1996. There's something about his moment in time and Bill Clinton’s way to explain our economic troubles. It’s a perfect moment for him to speak to the country. When he gets up there, it's just going to crystallize a lot of the issues in this election.

What do you expect from Clinton?

I think I’m more excited to see him speak tonight than I’ve ever been. Even more than in 1996. I think his role is more important in some ways tonight than it's ever been, because Bill Clinton has a unique perspective about how we got into this economic disaster we’re in. He’ll add to the substance of this convention in a way that will have a huge affect on the race.

Were you on the floor in 1996?

I think so. It gets hazy. This is my first year as a delegate. I’ve always had to scrounge up tickets, but I definitely was inside for his speech in Chicago. That was my first convention: A bunch of my friends piled into crummy cars and had the time of our lives. In 1996, I was working at a group called Save our Security, a group working on social welfare policy. We had an event to launch (the 2030 Center) if I recall.

You've been to each DNC since then. What do you remember about them?

In 2000, I was a surrogate for the Gore campaign, speaking about why Gore was going to protect social security.

In 2004, I was working for Rock the Vote. It was special for me because I’d gotten to know Obama. I gave him a big hug the day before his speech, and later that night he came to the Rock the Vote concert. My wife was executive director with the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and I met him through her.  Around the convention we had LL Cool J, Maroon 5.

2008, I was in Denver, and I had been the National Youth Vote Director with the Obama campaign, and we’d just had our son. He was 10 months old, and we brought him to Denver. It was kind of a debacle, because he would be up at 3 a.m. every day. We had to go to bed at 9 p.m. every night, so it wasn’t the most fun convention.

What's different this year from other conventions?

Not much. There was a similar state of euphoria behind significant leaders. I’m not sure if it was quite as intense with Kerry, although everyone hated Bush enough to get behind him. This is my first time in the delegate section, and it was powerful for me to be shaking one of those signs instead of sitting in the rafters.

By this young person appearance, I dont think he realizes what he is saying nor understands the administration (Clinton). He wasn't old enough to relate. Clinton's fiscal policies and the current administration are so different. This administration has been a total fiscal disaster.

Wow, Sandra. You don't even know who Councilmember Riemer is? How embarrassing. Though I'm sure he thanks you for saying he looks young.

I'm in "Normal America" and the second Clinton hits the stage football goes on mute on my computer and the former POTUS gets the big screen. Very intrigued for his comments tonight.

Greg, I bet you get those tinglings in your legs too... if you only knew the truth about clinton, but then again, you are probably too young to know and to comprehend what he did and how he got there. Clinton gets too much credit for the good economy of the 1990s, which was already growing from the Reagan and Bush policies, which helped businesses grow and prosper, when he took office. The Republican-controlled Congress helped improve the economy by exercising fiscal restraint. Now go and find out the REAL facts of the clinton era...

Clinton is perfect. The party that says the other party has a war on women, has Clinton as a speaker! And the man has no shame about it at all. When are we done with this guy? Like Carter the lib ex presidents dont ever go away. Clinton defending Hussien, this is perfect.

reaganredux, I know what you mean. Funny how the democrat party will point fingers at the GOP as woman haters and users and manipulators of women...hahahah I wonder what Monica Lewinski will say about how "slick willy" smoked the cigars after he used them on her? I must admit, Clinton knew where he stood and knew to keep quiet, and let the Republican led Congress cut spending and left businesses alone, which helped them prosper, caused more businesses to be established, helped more people find jobs and kids out of college were gewtting hired. Clinton knew how to leave businesses alone because of his and Hillary's (when she was on the board of directors) ties in Wal-mart and how they made millions from their stock purchases and selling of their stock.

I agree with Hans, he was right! I watched and heard the Cllinton Speech last night. It was great, a lesson and learning for those people who don't know what is really happening in our country. I am 74 years old woman, African American and know how important it is to keep informed and these events are on top of the list. For people like Sandra and Robert, they need to hear the truth, ask hard questions, get answers, and be informed before they speak.

Marian, with all due respect. I could care less what ol Hansie has to say. He is a card carrying member of the socialist party. He is anti business, anti American. He believes in "sharing the wealth" of hard working americans, he does not like the middle class (although he say he does). If he liked the middle class, why does he keep voting for our taxes to be increased and increases waste in spending of taxpayers dollars. He is like the rest of them. Although I am a few yrs younger than you, I was a member of the democrat party for 30 yrs and did not like the way it was headed, so i got out. I do not like to be labeled "guilty through association" I did not want to be affiliated with racists, bigots, anti women, anti business... I HAVE been informed and paid attention to what was being said, not just their words, but what was actually being said. I vote for who will do best for ME, My FAMILY, MY NEIGHBORS and for ALL Americans. NOT PARTY...Those who vote just party are truly mis-informed. This video opened my eyes more after watching it some time back http://errvideo.com/ Ask your library to get it for you, which I don't think they will, but try it anyway.

More to inform you of how the democrats really are. Answer me this? Why is the black unemployment rate at 14%? Why is the young black unemployment rate 48%? Why are blacks failing in schools? Did you know that Obama voted against DC charter schools? Did you know that Obama voted against the voucher program to allow DC kids to go to charter schools and get a better education? Why do you think they ran Michelle Wi out as being DC school superintendant??? It was because she was bucking the UNION system and making teachers accountable for their students, thats why. Just as the union people are marching in Chicago, they don't want to be held accountable for their kids to learn. NOW, these are some real questions to ask yourself and to get the info of how the Democrat party is (as Van Jones, known communist and friend of Obama) puts it, To have The American Fall. If Hansie was so smart, why are more people leaving MoCo? Why are jobs going away in MoCo? It is because of people like him, thats why. Three more yrs for me and I will be rid of you people that are NOT free thinkers and just wanting handouts. http://www.black-and-right.com/the-democrat-race-lie/
