Fire in Silver Spring Destroys House, Injures Elderly Owner
The 94-year-old resident was taken to Holy Cross Hospital.
At approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening, the two-story brick house at 810 Lanark Way in Silver Spring caught fire, the official cause still undetermined at this time.
“Millie” D’Antuono, 94, who has lived at that address for more than 50 years, was in the house at the time of the blaze.
According to next door neighbor Rob Neely, three transformers exploded in succession near the intersection of Lanark Way and Dallas Avenue in South Four Corners.
"There were three loud booms, and then the power went out,” Neely said. “When we went to get flashlights out of the car, we noticed Ms. D’s house was on fire.”
Close by neighbor Joan Jacoby, who resides at the intersection near the explosion fire, also heard the loud noises and ventured outside to investigate.
“When I went outside, I saw arcs from the downed transformer going right to her house, both at the level of the shrubs and to the roof,” Jacoby said.
Repeated attempts to reach 911 failed, but once neighbors were able to get through, fire and rescue responded quickly. D’Antuono was transported to Holy Cross Hospital where she is being treated for a broken shoulder, sustained as neighbors pulled her from the burning structure, as well as smoke-related issues.
