Firefighters Investigating Oxygen Tank Leak at Fairland Nursing Home

Fire and rescue officers were dispatched to the Fairland neighborhood of Silver Spring early Friday afternoon.

A recently filled oxygen tank began leaking at Fairland Nursing Home in Silver Spring Friday morning and fire and rescue officers were called to the scene, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters were dispatched right before 1 p.m. with reports of a possible gas leak at the business, located at 2100 Fairland Road. Upon arrival, the crew found the leaking oxygen tank behind the nursing home. A hazmat team also responded to the scene because of a possible gas leak.

The building was not evacuated and no one was injured, Garcia said. Representatives from the gas company are in route to address the tank, he said.

Garcia said tank leaks can be caused when an oxygen tank is filled too much or when the temperature outside gets too hot and the gas inside of the tank expands.
