Ice Cream and Liquor Stores Help Fill Out Burtonsville Town Square; 13 Vacancies Remain

Montgomery County Liquor and a Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin’ Donuts combination store are two of the new businesses opening in the new shopping center.

At least two new stores will open in Burtonsville Town Square, the 140,000-square foot retail center anchored by Giant and CVS Pharmacy at the intersection of Columbia Pike and MD-198.

Since the updated Giant opened to much fanfare last November, news on what will occupy the remaining vacancies has been slow, but inquiries by Patch turned up  new developments.

This Sunday a Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin’ Donuts combination restaurant will open in the corner spot on the eastern edge of the property.  Franchise owner Chetan Bhakani said he’ll open with a giveaway: free travel mugs for the first 200 people who buy a cup of coffee.

The Burtonsville location of Montgomery County Liquor used to be located on property that is now Burtonsville Town Square, but moved across the street when construction on the new shopping center began. It’s currently in the older of the two Burtonsville shopping centers, but has a reserved spot right next to Giant in the newer center.

When the liquor store will be open is unknown. Gus Montes de Oca, Division of Operations chief for the Department of Liquor Control, said he doesn’t have an official opening day.

“Permits have been submitted and we have met with our contractors,” he told Patch via email. “We hope to have a firm date soon.”

Currently, three stores are open, including Giant, CVS and a cleaners. Five additional spaces have been leased: Baskin-Robbins/Dunkin’ Donuts, the county liquor store, a nail salon and chain businesses Verizon and Hair Cuttery.

By Patch’s count, 13 spaces still remain to be leased. Chris Jones, the property’s developer and primary leasing contact, was unavailable for comment.

Correction: An earlier version of this story version of this story incorrectly stated that Bhakani's store was once in Burtonsville Crossing.

Nice article! I don't see hours of operation for Dunkin Donuts, nor a hypertext link to your business directory. Could you indulge, for those who want to line up for a free mug! ;-)

You wrote in reference to Dunkin Donuts that "Franchise owner Chetan Bhakani...operated the same business across the street at Burtonsville Crossing" and that is not true. The Giant did make the move across the street but Dunkin Donuts used to be a part of the old shopping center that has been torn down and replaced by Burtonsville Town Square. If anything, the Dunkin Donuts is simply returning to the strip mall it used to be a part of in the past. You're correct that a lot of the stores are leaving the almost vacant Burtonsville Crossing Center, but DD is not one of them. Thanks for the article! I'm always interested to see what is coming in to the new shopping center, especially the new restaurants we have been promised. Thanks for the update!
