President Obama Lays Out State of Union - Read the Live Chat

Just a few miles from the Maryland line, the president emphasizes the economy in the first State of the Union address of his second term.

President Obama delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night, focusing on the economy and legislative action to end gun violence.

Follow what news organizations and blogs reported on the archive of the live feed.

Marylanders could claim as their own Anne Arundel County student Jack Andraka who was in the audience as he is the first lady's guest. Andraka, 16, of Crownsville made a huge splash in 2012 with his invention of a sensor that can help more accurately and efficiently detect pancreatic cancer. He is a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) student at North County High School in Glen Burnie.

Have something to say about the president's speech? Tell us in comments.

Nothing but lies coming from his mouth last night.

"Energy is cheaper". Really? Anyone look at the gas prices? How about your electric bill. Nothing but lies.

The economy is stronger? Tell that to the unemployed and underemployed of this country that, thanks to his flawed policies, are unable to find work.

Quite the contrary, every gesture he has made to the Boehner Houes, GOP/TPARTY ideologues have been rebuffed even at a high cost to the nation and the economy. When a GOP operative says that his principle goal in his legislative life is to make Obama fail, it is very obvious who the obstructionists are in DC. Reagan was the one who started the war against the poor, union workers and women. He was the face if division when he labeled the poor/ Welfare queens in cadillacs.
Obama has achieved extraordinary things inspite of the GOP. Senator Rubio took advantages of grants for college, food stamps and Medicare for his family, but would deny those life lines to others. Obama is not the divider in this nation. It is the GOP/TPARTY failed policies of TRICKLE DOWN.

Rubio defended continuing to help people with higher education against Obama's recent attempts at going after for profit schools. Obama's attacks on that sector of education is a disaster, especially for the poor. Not everyone can get a liberal arts degree. Some people want to go to truck driving school, or Medical or Dental Assisting school, or learn hair styling. Me thinks you don't understand the issues, but are good at parroting the talking points and putting the blame on those not in charge.

Maryellen, remember the language of your "great uniter"

" you lost, I won" - said by Obama when republicans were trying to get some compromise on Obamacare.

On the latest budget deal when republicans agreed to tax increases, Boehner asked the president what he was willing to do on spending in return.
Obama replied "I get that for free"

Compromise is not caving in to all of his positions.Sorry.

They were all in charge of all of the oversight committees, housing, banking, finance. This was by design, and lets not forget Obama was a senator for that short period of time, where he voted yes for raising taxes and abortion, and present on everything else. And lets not forget the disrespect that was shown from the left wing progressives towards anyone who didn't agree with their agenda, I don't remember anyone being appalled by that. Food Stamp program, aka SNAP, is a federal program reauthorized once every five years. Last President in office during reauthorization was President George W Bush in 2008.

To Bush's credit, he vetoed the bill because of the added tax credits to large agri-corporations believing that this was not the right place for government tax dollars to be spent. The house overrode his veto, voting 316 to 108, with 100 Republicans siding with 216 Democrats. The Senate also overwhelmingly supported the override voting 81 to 15, to approve the farm bill. In 2008 the Senate Composition was 48 Democrats and 49 Republicans with 1 vacant Senate position.

Frank,

I remember who put them in:

"On September 14, 2001 bill House Joint Resolution 64 passed in the House. The totals in the House of Representatives were: 420 Ayes, 1 Nay and 10 Not Voting. The Nay was Barbara Lee, D-CA. [2] Lee is notable as the only member of either house of Congress to vote against this bill.[3]
[edit]Senate
On September 14, 2001 Senate Joint Resolution 23 passed in the Senate by roll call vote. The totals in the Senate were: 98 Ayes, 0 Nays, 2 Present/Not Voting (Senators Larry Craig - R and Jesse Helms - R)."

Sanchez is lying again.

Marco Rubio is not more popular than Obama. The favorability poll cited indicates the following statistics:
"Rubio favorability rating is at 27 percent, while 15 percent hold an unfavorable view. Another 57 percent said they don’t know enough about him". The truth is he netted more favorability points than Obama since the last poll, he is not viewed more favorably though.

President Obama's favorability from the same poll is 51%.

51% favorable is greater than 27% percent favorability. Both have had net increases since the last poll.

It's interesting how many people on here do not have the courage to use their real name when posting. And don't give me the line about "reprisals" from friends, family or work. If 99% of you had even an ounce of courage and integrity you would speak using your real name - and that goes for "both sides". That said...

President Obama inherited a mess. History doesn't lie. While Bush had a "dem congress" to work with, there was no super majority to get much done on either side. Again, history doesn't lie. Dems and repubs alike voted FOR the two wars (altho their information was based on lies). Money doesn't grow on tree's and someone has to pay for the bullets, the tanks, the fuel, the soldiers. Financial crisis? Yep, you bet. Two wars will do that to a country. Doesn't matter who is at fault... It still has to be paid for. And folks, that would be you and me. Simple math - and history - do not lie.

Let's say we put aside all the childish name calling, grow up, stop the blame game, and get to the bottom of this mess and find some real solutions. Until that garbage stops, we are stuck. And in case anyone hasn't noticed, the ENTIRETY of the world is in a recession. It isn't just us "poor little ole American's". This WILL take a 'world solution'.... Otherwise it is band-aid and nothing more.

A Doctor would make a horrible President. Most of the ones I know are socially inept from spending years with their noses in a book. They are nerds. They also have huge egos and think that there success in the medical field carries over into any other endeavor they want to get involved in. That's why they are so easily parted with their money in hare brained investment schemes.

Talk about showing your true colors; the arrogant Oblama with a sneer on his face didn't like it one bit. I don't give a rats a$$ what color a smug arrogant person is.....if he's smug and arrogant.....he's smug and arrogant. Just can't believe all the "sheeple" that voted for him. Well written political speech - but what a load of BS. Can anyone imagine if the democrats again controlled congress and the WH. We already see what mess was created in 2008 with Obamacare where the focus should have been on the economy. The only thing Obama is concerned with is his legacy and perpetuation of his liberal agenda.

Comments by the "crew" expected but still very sad. The President won his elections as a result of huge majorities from the following groups:
Blacks voted for him with at least a 90% majority. Yes, they did vote against their interest, but this is their choice.
Latinos and Union Workers. Homosexuals/transgendered population.
Government Employees. Scrared Senior Citizens. Contractors who rely on Govt. Funding. Students and the very poor who rely on govt. aid.
He won fair and square. Can't fight that battle anymore. The problem is - if you look at the traits of these groups, they from a financial perspective take more from the government than what they give. Obama's agenda, although very close to a middle school social studies agenda does in his opinion, address these people. Hence - as this group grows (and it is growing), our deficits will naturally continue to grow. Unforunately, it is in the Democratic parties interest to grow these groups. Good for them politically, but bad for the country.
It ultimately is not racial, but rather simple math. Our country is running out of productive folks who sweat collection of their A/R so they can keep folks working and paying taxes to fund these groups.

Steve - unfortunately for our country the cranky old white people you mention have done most of the building and investing in this country and made the country move forward. African countries still cannot provide for themselves basic services. As the demographics change, the Obama base has not historically demonstrated their ability to continue to move the country forward - rather they depend on the government for help and push hard to be "victims."
Be happy that your man is in charge. Be sad that his background and handlers around him have effectively put the foot on the accelerator as we head toward the cliff. Bush started the engine and got us halfway to the cliff, Obama is speeding us over.

I am at the point where I think the best course of action is to simply let BO and the democrats fully implement their plan. Let time be the best judge - whatever happens I'm sure we'll find a way to bail ourselves out. Anything would be better than the present state of political and rhetorical gridlock. BO's push to raise the minimum wage is absolute proof that his agenda is about lip service to his base and not economic progress. A freshman Econ student can explain how raising the minimum wage kills entry level jobs, small businesses and actually results in loss for those at the bottom. Unfortunately the general public doesn't understand basic Econ and takes BO on his word. I say let it all play out and pick up the pieces later. Ready to watch the left eat their words. After all, we'll all be underwater due to global warming in a couple of years anyway: you know ... sea level rise, hurricanes every other week, wildfires, blizzards, tornadoes ... You get the point. I say lead the way "commander in chief" ... You have all of the answers!
