A Washington, DC, man faces charges of attempted murder and assault in a police chase across Prince George's and Montgomery counties that ended in the injury of the man and a state trooper, police said.

The suspect was identified as James C. Gregory, 23. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, state police said.

He will be charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, theft of a motor vehicle, theft over $1,000, resisting arrest, false statement to police and numerous traffic charges, according to a state police press release.

Police say they responded Friday to a report of a stolen 2007 gray Honda traveling southbound on Interstate 95 and Interstate 495 in Prince George’s County.

A trooper followed the vehicle into the Greenbelt Metro Station where the driver parked in an open space, according to police. The trooper approached the stopped vehicle on foot and ordered the suspect to turn off the vehicle, a police statement said.

The suspect attempted to elude the trooper by exiting the metro parking area onto northbound Interstate 495, and another trooper joined the pursuit, police said.

The suspect accelerated, weaving through traffic and exiting onto Baltimore Avenue heading north, according to police.

Trooper First Class Manuel Moreno attempted to place stop sticks (tire deflating devices) in the roadway to disable the stolen Honda, but the suspect avoided the trap and struck Moreno with the car, police said. Moreno was treated for minor injuries and released.

Police said that the pursuit went through the Ikea parking lot, back onto Baltimore Avenue and I-495 into Montgomery County. After exiting onto northbound New Hampshire Avenue, the suspect parked the vehicle in the 10800 block of Blossom Lane and was taken into custody when he was seen walking away, police said.
