The brakes on a Ride On bus that crashed into a Silver Spring home Aug. 20 were fine, according to Montgomery County spokesperson Patrick Lacefield. He said that the county’s investigation of the bus did not reveal any mechanical issues with the vehicle, which was last serviced for preventative maintenance on July 31, the Washington Examiner reports.

Driver Emlyn Harewood, 64, told the newspaper the brakes failed when he turned onto Avenel Road in the Hillandale neighborhood. Instead of turning onto the street, the vehicle landed in the yard of 9407 Avenel Road.

The bus continued moving until it hit an unoccupied taxi that was parked in the driveway of 9405 Avenel Road. The taxi was pushed from the driveway into the yard and the Ride On bus then careened into the front porch and front door of the home. (Watch surveillance video from inside of the bus.) 

The president of Harewood’s union, Montgomery County’s Municipal and County Government Employees Organization, told the Examiner he doubted the county’s findings. 

"(Harewood's) got a good work history. He's a good driver. He's a good employee," Gino Renne said of the 18-year Ride On veteran driver. "That's why I'm a little suspect about the county's claim that there wasn't any equipment malfunction."

Harewood is on paid leave and has yet to be interviewed by investigators. He and four passengers sustained minor injuries in the collision.
