Montgomery County Cancels 4th of July Fireworks
No county-sponsored fireworks this year due to storm aftermath.
Montgomery County has canceled its popular 4th of July fireworks displays and festivities, county officials announced late Monday.
Citing continued disruption due to Friday's severe storm, the county needs to devote its resources to cleanup and recovery, officials said.
The Mid-County Sparkles! Fireworks display planned for Einstein High School in Kensington and the Germantown Glory fireworks at the Maryland SoccerPlex in the South Germantown Recreational Park have both been canceled.
The mid-county site is still hazardous due to fallen tree limbs and debris, officials said.
“I made this very difficult decision based on the ongoing need to apply county police, fire and rescue, transportation, and other county resources to help our residents who continue to be severely impacted by this recent storm,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett.
“While I sincerely regret having to take these steps, I believe that the health and welfare of our residents is paramount in this difficult time."
He said residents should have private celebrations and continue to reach out to neighbors and friends feeling the impact of the storm's damage and loss of electricity.
The City of Gaithersburg also announced the cancellation of its fireworks display at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
"We explored all options to continue with the event as planned while not impeding with restoration work but found that was just not possible," said acting City Manager Tony Tomasello.
The City of Rockville announced Monday evening that it was canceling its fireworks and Fourth of July celebration planned for Montgomery College.
The Takoma Park Fourth of July parade and fireworks are being held as scheduled, according to Takoma Park Media Specialist Craig Terrill.
The parade starts at 10 a.m., July 4, at the intersection of Carroll and Ethan Allen avenues. The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m at the Takoma Park Middle School.
Updated to reflect Gaithersburg and Rockville festivities also canceled.

Leggett is more interested in bashing Pepco for political points and using the excuse of storm clean-up for not putting on the fireworks display at Einstien High School. It's funny, Northern Virginia got hit just as hard as us and their displays are going on. Kensington cancels the annual bike parade because someone might trip over a tree limb?

A lot of people came in from out of the area to help with the power outages here and all of the trucks are parked at the fairgrounds. That is at least one of the reasons they are not having the fireworks at the fairgrounds. I drove past there earlier on my way to the store and saw what seemed like about 100 trucks parked there and some on their way out. So I am assuming that there may be almost 200 power trucks parkng there when they are not out working on the outages. A lot of others in Maryland cancelled ther fireworks too for one reason or the other. So disappointing, especially for the kids :(

Poolesville is in Montgomery County, isn't it? As far as I can tell, they haven't cancelled. Did you see anything online that confirms Poolesville cancelled?

Ridiculous. There is no disruption except for people without power. You would think that the county would want to get them out of their houses to a place where its cooler.

?? Are you trying to make a joke? Or are you not aware of the world around you that currently consists of police busy directing traffic at intersections w/down signals, EMS busy w/people literally dying of heat, getting in accidents, etc.?

Sorry, vinniegambini! That idea is not 'too cool' (pun intended) when you could be starting a fire in your neighborhood as well. Hummm!

I wish they could have done what they did 11 years ago when it poured on the Fourth--move it to another day. In this case, that day might have to be a couple weeks later, but I personally would rather wait and have fireworks late than not have them at all. Of course,I realize that there are financial considerations: By not having the fireworks, resources are saved at a time when the County is currently paying for a lot of unforeseen expenses.

A classic political move by Leggett. People can drive to work, drive home, conduct their business without problems and yet he cancels fireworks two days from now. He wants to be able to point to Pepco and criticize them to curry favor with the electorate in November. This man is a phoney.

I've been told that PEPCO uses the county fairgrounds during outage emergencies also. There are many localities that have fireworks on the Saturday before or after July 4th. In Maryland that at least includes Laurel (this Saturday) and Middletown (last Saturday). Having it on another day seems fine to me.

I agree; most of the county has power now, and people have been looking forward to the fireworks display. It looks like a stupid political move to me, and I'll be voting for Leggett's opponent.

There are more important things in life than Fireworks. Maybe next year the Fireworks and celebration for the 4th of July can be made a bigger event to make up for this year's cancellation. This has been a bad time for the communities who have lost power, not to mention the damages and spoilage of food. Many are dealing with getting trees removed. I approve of the fireworks cancellation.

Im dealing with the issues just like everyone but personally would like a little time away from the issue. 30 mins of not thinking about the money wasted on food in my freezer etc. Very sad but life goes on. Looks like it will be my first year watching the DC fireworks live.

Those of you whining about this, or seeing some weird conspiracy theory: Have you been through the neighborhoods around Einstein? I can't speak to the other locations, but that neighborhood still has no power (we live within a few blocks of there and PEPCO says at this point there is still no crew even assigned to our outsage!) and there are many many trees down. It is a dangerous situation just for the people who actually live there, add bunches of other folks coming to see fireworks plus the danger from the fireworks and it just seems like a very bad idea.

Since the cost of the fireworks and other expenses are already sunk, why couldn't it be postponed rather than canceled, even if it means that the County limits it to a fireworks display with the recorded music?
No one needs any of the "Sparkles" event, just as no one in this country needs fireworks anywhere. Still, I think most people, especially children, look forward to fireworks on the Fourth. I do as well. If it can't be on the Fourth, then let's move the fireworks display to a date when the cleanup will be completed.
Didn't the County save money this winter by having almost no snow removal or snow emergency costs? That should help subsidize the current cleanup costs.

The speed traps that you speak of are state workers and not county police. The ICC is patrolled by state transportation authority police, not county police.

thanks for the update on that, I was moving at too high a rate of speed to read the side of the cars ( j/k) :-) my point is that when there is a disaster, (And maryland was declared a disaster ) does it really matter ?., im thinking with hundreds of traffic lights out , multiple deaths, trees blocking entire neighborhoods, power out to hundreds of thousands, the county, the state should reassign those personell to the more important pressing matters at hand.... the only reason i was on the ICC was due to the overwhelming number of blacked out intersections without police presence. That lone police officer if manning an intersection would better serve and protect the citizens of maryland than giving out tickets on the ICC ( and no i didnt get a ticket on that day .

I can understadn MOVING the fireworks, but a straight out cancel is a bit much. The fairgrounds are being used as a staging area for some of the outof town help coming, but Germantown - C/mon man.
THis is a politcal move. No other area has cancelled have they? DC will still go off, as will Fairfax, Manassas, and all of NoVa. Guess Maryland would like me to spend my money thier and not in my home state.

Yeah, postpone rather than cancel them! It has been done before. I'm sure we, the humble taxpayers, will be losing a ton of money by cancelling. What about all the small vendors who have shelled out big bucks for supplies? They're taking a double hit. This is yet another reason the fireworks shouldn't be done at Einstein in the middle of a densely populated residential neighborhood. If they were in downtown Wheaton, where they started, this wouldn't be such a problem.

I think it is smart and responsible of the county not to spend money on fireworks when they are spending a lot extra cleaning up after that huge storm on Friday. Bravo to them for being frugal with our tax money! And people can still metro to DC to watch the national fireworks that night, or go to Takoma.

I hope the City of G'Burg or the fairground owners is charging PEPCO a huge sum for using the property ( but I doubt it). Failure to have a responsible plan for managing out of town resources is just another example of PEPCO desire not to manage these events.

I don't know if I missed another post but in case you didn't know, they have rescheduled the fireworks (at least the Gaithersburg ones) for Friday, July 13th (rain date the 14th). Yay! I have to agree with the comment made prior to mine: "Didn't the County save money this winter by having almost no snow removal or snow emergency costs? That should help subsidize the current cleanup costs." I also have to say that if the budget was a problem, I can see the cancellation, but I think that the issue (with Gaithersburg at least) was more logistics than budget (since I would assume that they would have already purchased the fireworks more than a week before the 4th). Selfishly, I'm happy they rescheduled because my daughters look forward to the fireworks and I love seeing the looks on their faces during the show. :)
