One Comment Can Net $500 for Mother Nature

Any organization that's trying to green up our world can take home a bit of green for itself.

Tires a'plenty have been separated from the other piles of debris so that they can be properly disposed. Some of the debris was simply trash, other items could be recycled while some of it would be salvaged for art and building projects.

A penguin — coated in oil and found on the beach in Tauranga, New Zealand — gets washed at a makeshift camp in October. The belly of the penguin is normally white. The 47,000-ton Rena, a Liberan container vessel, struck a reef on Wednesday causing an oil leak. It was one of the worst environmental disasters ever in New Zealand.

Patch is running a contest over the next week in which readers nominate an environmental nonprofit and the winning organization will receive a $500 donation to an environmental charity.

Your role is simple: leave a comment below, nominating an organization you want to see receive the money.

Then, on April 30, we'll pick a comment at random and the organization gets a check. There is one shot per commenter but other commenters who support the group are welcome — so the more comments an organization receives, the better chance it has at winning. If you know of a worthy nonprofit, have it mobilize its supporters to leave comments.

One of Patch's founding principles was that people are interested in helping their communities through volunteering, and this is an expression of that principle. (If you're interested in blogging on your hometown site, click the "start a blog" link and start writing about your interests.)

This contest is being run on all Patch sites in Maryland, so your nomination will be competing against Patch readers from across the state.

If you click "Follow comments" at the end of this article, you can keep abreast of the nominations. If you sign up for a newsletter subscription (top right of the home page), you'll know first thing that your group won.

  • Open to legal residents of the 50 United States, and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter, leave a comment below, nominating an environmental charity (501(c)(3) organization) you would like to see receive the donation from Patch.
  • All entries must be received by April 30, 2012, at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.
  • You may enter once.
  • One (1) winner will be selected in a random drawing.
  • One Grand Prize Winning environmental charity will receive a $500 donation from Patch.
  • Click Here for complete Official Rules.

The Bowleys Quarters Community Association (BQCA) has adopted part of Bowleys Quarters Road and is in their fifth year of cleanups at a pace of 4 times per year. We had coordinated the installation of 42 Oyster Hotels to cleanup the river until the fresh water replaced the brackish water needed by the oysters. We have also fought against the condo proposal to place a building footprint of 128,000 square feet with only a 50 foot setback from Galloway Creek without a storm water runoff plan. The project was denied for the third time as of last November as a result of a 10 day Hearing.

The work of this organization is nothing short of amazing...been around as an all volunteer, non-profit since the 1930's when a band of like minded hunters began to lament the loss of duck habitat. They own title outright to 12,693,635 acres in North American and have restored a total of 108,569,037. The fact that hunters are at the heart of the organization might bother some, but pound for pound they've done more than any other organization bar none to maintain and restore wetlands...and long before it was vogue.

Waste Not Carroll [county] is a great example of dedicated citizens making progress with complex solid waste issues. This group has deftly managed to get the attention of county government and realigned its focus from an expensive, non-sustainable solution by building a $500 Million waste to energy incinerator to examining how citizens can reduce their weekly waste pickups through recycling and composting. This is a hands on group that has tackled messy wastes at may county festivals by literally sorting through trash bins. They have the respect of government officials and the citizens.

How about Catonsville Rails To Trails? We are currently building the 2.2 mile Short Line Trail which will extend from the back of Charlestown Retirement Community to Mellor Ave. near the Armory. We need funding for cleanup days to clear the trail. When completed, the trail will connect dozens of neighborhoods to the business district.

Catonsville Rails to Trails (CRTT) . Has clean up and paved the old trolley line between Frederick and Edmonson. CRTTis now cleaning up the trail where the old Catonsville Short line rail road ran through Catonsville. Plan is to clear this Short Line trail and have it paved for walking and biking, which both cleans up the evironment but also enhances recreation and "livability" within Catonsville.

Patapsco Heritage Greenway -- They put on great scavenger hunts for middle school children in Baltimore and Howard counties. The kids leave knowing more about the Patapsco River Valley and how to protect it.

If the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy wins the $500 prize, on behalf of one of my companies I will match it. If GVC fails to win, I will still donate the $500 to GVC. I would hope other business owners would also choose to help.

Kentlands Community Foundation's GO GREEN group in Gaithersburg, MD is actively engaged in educating the community about local environmental issues. Since starting up five years ago, volunteers created a community garden in the Kentlands neighborhood, organized annual community cleanups, organized an environmental film series, set up a variety of talks with environmental speakers and advocated for non-synthetic, organic lawn care practices in our community.

The Kentlands Community Foundation supports and encourages volunteerism in many programs including the Go Green Group. The Go Green group educates and advocates for green practices in our small community in a BIG way. Our community leaders and volunteers make Green fashionable.

It seems unlikely that "one comment" will net $500. As Patch explains, "we'll pick a comment at random and the organization gets a check. There is one shot per commenter but other commenters who support the group are welcome — so the more comments an organization receives, the better chance it has at winning. If you know of a worthy nonprofit, have it mobilize its supporters to leave comments."

It actually sounds to me more like a way for Patch to boost traffic on its site so AOL can go to advertisers and Wall Street investors and say, see--it's working! To those offended by my cynicism, sorry, but when the pool of comments includes people who have commented twice, and people with unrecognizable names, the word "randomness" loses its meaning.
