Police Say Man Stabbed at Silver Spring Post Office Over Cutting in Line
A 58-year-old male was stabbed outside of the U.S. Post Office in Colesville Thursday afternoon. Police say another man mistakenly thought he had cut in line.
A 67-year-old man stabbed a 58-year-old man outside of the United States Post Office in Colesville at 13217 New Hampshire Ave. Thursday because the man thought the victim had cut in line, police said.
Officers were called to the scene at 2:18 p.m. Thursday.
The suspect was waiting in line when he observed the victim step in front of him to complete his business, police said. The victim had previously been working with a postal service employee and had stepped aside to finish some paperwork. He was motioned back to the counter by an employee, police said.
The suspect interpreted the action as cutting in line, police said, and waited outside of the post office under the vestibule for the victim to come outside. When the suspect spotted the victim, he attacked him, police said.
Two female postal workers tried to break up the fight, according to police, and at least one of the employees pepper sprayed the suspect.
“The actions of these employees may have saved the life of, but most definitely assisted in preventing further injury to, the victim,” police officials wrote in a press statement.
Police found the victim suffering from “multiple” stab wounds when they arrived at the scene.
Police found a suspect about a mile away, near the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Route 29. His name has not been released because he has not been formally charged.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

To B. Wong: My comment was written before the details were provided. When this story was first posted on the Patch yesterday, it only said there was a stabbing, but gave no details.

Police are still finding out details around this incident. Once we have them, we'll update the story. Is this post office usually quiet Syd?

Thanks, Tamika - I just read the update! Yes, I think this post office is usually very quiet; I haven't heard of any problems in the past. Just one of those random things, unfortunately.

I'm in this post office two or three times a week and it's usually very busy. This story demonstrates why I'm pro-gun-control. The NRA likes to say that if someone wants to kill, a knife will do the job as efficiently as a gun. But if this attacker had used a gun instead of a knife he could have potentially shot several other people in the time it took him to stab that one poor victim. And the employees who came to the rescue could also have been shot before they even reached the doorway.
Very shocking to have this happen in your own backyard. My daughter lives in Brooklyn, Crown Heights specifically, and this crime in Colesville reminds me not to worry so much about her safety. Violence is everywhere.

I agree. The Colesville post office is just a busy but quiet place. People hold the door open for you, they help you figure out the weighing and stamp machines, they say hello whether you know them or not. I don't get it -- it seems as random as some of the senseless violence happening in other places. Here, it's just so out of the ordinary to seem not real.

Great response Pamela Jones.
My opinion is, "the United States is toooooooooooo VIOLENT." Why all this violence? This man must go to prison for the next 40 yrs. I don't give a dam if he's 100. Stabbing someone is barbaric and vile. He should never have his freedom ever again. Horrific!

Pamela, As has been proven many times, gun control only works for the law abiding citizen. The people who have them then are the criminals. There are many crimes stopped by legal gun carrying citizen who don't make the news. Just think, if several people on the planes had had guns, 911 would never have happened.

Pamela, you do bring up a good point. However, the truth is, if someone wants to hurt someone else, they will. (ex: 9-11 and box cutters) If the person that wants to cause harm has the will and the ambition to proceed with the action, the type of weapon used could vary widely. Guns are weapons, but so are knives, stun guns, bricks, broken bottles, belts, wire, rope and even hands. We can't make the last weapon in that sentence illegal. Laws don't affect criminals, they don't care if they break them. In my opinion, it all depends on the individuals state of mind. It's not the knife's fault. It's the person using it. It's the person that controls what happens....not the weapon.

Sensless! This is my post office too, and although it's usually busy, people are generally very patient. It's chilling to think that someone could get so upset because they (mistakenly) thought someone cut in front of them. I hope the suspect goes to jail for a long time. We don't need people like that on the streets.

It would really be nice if these articles would mention the state as well as the town. I usually have to click on a link, in just about every article written, to find out the state. Do the authors of these stories not know that people from around the world read these and might not know what state the mentioned town is in? I certainly hope the victim makes a speedy and complete recovery. You never know these days, what will happen from one moment to the next. The world is definitely becoming a scarey place.

May I just make an observation? Do you all see how angry and harsh some of the people here are getting over typed words? Our society has gotten so angry and vile -- for what reason? Anger is just running wild. Hope the ones I am talking about can go back and reread their posts and ask yourself--"wow---did I really get that angry for something someone else said that did not even apply to me". Take care and be safe all.

This attack is proof that we need stronger Knife-control laws. If we only had knife-control laws that prohibited citizens from buying knives, this kind of thing would never happen, and we could live in a violence-free paradise. Everyone should stand up and demand knife-control laws!

After reading some of the comments that needs to go unsaid (name calling, telling people to go on medication) how dare the commentors complain about the man with the knife. You are just as bad, starting trouble. Wouldnt it be ok to just say we are sorry about what happened and wish the victim well? People are using this commentary to support their own political agenda. Sad

To L. Cane, who said "As has been proven many times, gun control only works for the law abiding citizen."
Where has that been proven? What studies? It's an opinion, not a fact. Stricter limits in this country on gun manufacturing, importation, and ownership would, in my opinion, automatically reduce gun violence. It wouldn't eliminate it, but it would reduce it. And it obviously wouldn't stop anyone from killing with another weapon but guns make killing easy, impersonal, and fast.
Leonard
6:39 pm on Friday, July 27, 2012
Actually, what L. Cane posits is a deductive argument. Criminals do not obey laws; therefore, they cannot be expected to comply with firearm legislation. By demonstration, in countries were legal firearm ownership has been abolished or seriously curtailed, the bad guys still manage to arm themselves. The reduction of gun violence, specifically home invasion robberies, has followed in jurisdictions where private ownership of firearms has increased. This is counter-intuitive for those who believe gun violence would be solved if there were no guns. And the liberal media won't report where firearms have deterred crime, even when no shots have been fired. Other journals provide that data.

I remember taking Judo in college. The sensei, a seventh degree black belt, correctly told us, "someone wants to fight you, you walk away". That didn't mesh with my purpose. I wanted to learn how to kick heads. I gradually learned to accept his wisdom. He taught us that Judo and Jiu Jitsu was a last resort.
Now we have a 67 yr old waiting to ambush a fellow patron because his mind conjured up taking cuts in line??? With a knife?!? And no threat of physical harm to himself??? My wife's kindergarten class is better behaved (and unarmed). What happened to common sense

Wow, you can't feel safe anywhere anymore! I don't care if a person cuts in line or not, you just don't go around taking the law into your own hands, unless you yourself are being threatened. If the jerk would have just asked the guy why he was cutting in front of him, he would have found out what the situation really was. But no, @@. I sure hope the victim sues the hell out of him!
