POLL: Do You Support Susan G. Komen's Decision to Defund Planned Parenthood?

The cancer group says it doesn't support organizations that are under Federal investigation, but Planned Parenthood says Komen is bowing to anti-abortion pressure. What do you think?

On Tuesday, the Susan G. Komen Foundation decided to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood after it learned that Planned Parenthood was under federal investigation.

In a massive response, supporters of Planned Parenthood  have raised $650,000 in just 24 hours--almost as much as the pulled Komen funding.

Planned Parenthood contends that Komen is bowing to anti-abortion pressure.

According to the Washington Post: "Komen also hired a vice president last year, Karen Handel, who had previously advocated for the group’s defunding in her run for Georgia governor."

Who do you support? Should Komen have pulled their funding? Is Planned Parenthood better off?

Take our poll and let us know. Feel free to add additional thoughts in the comments section.

My entire family and I completely support the decision to defund Planned Parenthood. God WILL bless the organnization for taking a stand. Planned Parenthood's services focus mainly in their abortion services. Mammograms are a mere fraction of what they do. They do surgical abortions and refer for late term abortions. Planned Parenthood organization do more harm to women than they would ever care to addmit. KUDOS to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

"Planned Parenthood's services focus mainly in their abortion services."

What complete gibberish. Abortions account for a very small % of the services provided. I'm pro-life, but find your lies to be pathetic and infuriating. The debate has gone nowhere in 30 years thanks to people like you spewing whatever nonsense and misinformation you please.

Are you one of those "pro lifers" who want to save the unborn yet are also pro-war, against healthcare for all, and support the death penalty?

Maria, I hope you don't feel pained by critics who don't have the courage to include their full names, as you have. I can't count all the times I have seen anonymous comments accusing others of falsehoods.

Good grief, Earl, could you be more self-righteous about something completely meaningless? Personally, I don't think it's smart to use your full name, but to each their own. And no, no one was "accusing [her] of falsehoods," simply pointing out she's 100%, unequivocally, wrong and spreading junk facts to further her uneducated agenda. That's all. Too bad Komen realized how dumb they were being. Guess God won't be blessing them anymore, according to Maria.

Events happened quite quickly. Funding to PP was restored. Did your comment reflect that, or are you for Komen funding PP?

@jag - doesn't matter what % abortions account for of the services provided - You are still killing human beings - At conception there's a baby human brought to life - an abortion is no different then genocide of children - its murder plan and simple.
@Jesse Jones - shame on you! Your wife, whom you pledged your love to, died of the silent killer and you would not support preventing future deaths of cancer?
@Susan G - GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I know right now the death generation is having their say but in the end those who are FOR LIFE will support you even more!

Its disgraceful & definitively a political move by the Komen Foundation. The vast majority of services provided by Planned Parenthood are medical services for women who are under or uninsured! Those of you who believe it's purpose is provide abortions are either misinformed or just refuse to acknowledge the truth. Those who will be most affected are young women, and minorities who have no other access to care. Are their lives less valuable than those who can afford healthcare? Has it crossed your minds how many women will lose their lives because of this decision? If life is precious, all life is precious. Breast cancer is a personal issue for me. Those I love who have fought, fight, and lost, are/were more important than some political stance. Shame on the Komen Foundation &
to those of claiming you are "pro-life," shame on you!

FACT: Planned Parenthood does not have mammography equipment at any of their locations and they refer women to providers for the service.

fact: neither does SGK have mamography equipment. and if you check the website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_G._Komen_for_the_Cure#Use_of_funds they spend more on administrative cost then they do on helping anyone receive treatment. They 'educate' more than they 'research'. Taking my donation monies elsewhere.

Fact: There is more to appropriate Breast Cancer Screening than just Mammography. An appropriate breast exam by a medical provider is a vital component to proper screening and care. That is what is in question.

@Bonnie - your opinion doesn't mean anything. The fact is the hospital you use probably handles abortions as well. It's an EXTREMELY common procedure and completely legal. Save your politics for your politician and Supreme Court marches - keep your laughable sense of superiority to yourself when it comes to health institutions performing their duties (abortions and otherwise).

@jag - While Planned Parenthood officials claim that abortions constitute only 3% percent of their services, this figure is misleading. Out of the 10.5 million individual services they provided in 2006, 289,750 were abortions—roughly 3%. But this figure fails to account for the fact that a woman visiting Planned Parenthood for an abortion will receive several services—from a pregnancy test to some manner of counseling to the abortion itself—each of which is counted separately. A closer look at Planned Parenthood’s client and income numbers shows that the abortion figure is actually three times what they claim. Of 3.1 million Planned Parenthood clients in 2006, 9% got abortions. Moreover, abortion accounts for at least a third of Planned Parenthood’s total income from clinic services.

I thibk it was a life affirming decision. PP is not the only place the poor can go for pregnancy testing and counseling. Even if PP only provided funds for one abortion a year it still negates all the good things they do. Life is life and one life lost is too much. If you suppoet Planned Parenthood you are supporting abortion and the culture of death. God bless Susan Komen foundation for going against the grain and standing up for LIFE.

Planned Parenthood is a three-tiered operation; 1 Sex education (promoting promiscuity) 2 Promoting birth control (to prevent pregnancy) and 3 Abortion/child killing (when the birth control fails). These are the "services" they promote, and they make a lot of money doing it, aside from the hundreds of millions of dollars they receive in government funding; not to mention the fact that they criminally protect child molesters who bring in young girls for abortions to hide their crimes, and they also target minorities for destruction in the line of their eugenics-supporting founder Margaret Sanger. It is a medical fact that abortion greatly increases the risk of breast cancer. It is also a medical fact that the best prevention of breast cancer is for a woman to carry a child in the womb through a full-term pregnancy. Ending a pregnancy by means of surgical abortion or from use of oral contraceptives (which not only act to prevent pregnancy from occurring but can also cause a chemical abortion) can lead to a woman developing breast cancer down the road. Nearly fifty international studies since 1957 until now clearly reveal this. As long as Komen supports Planned Parenthood and continues to ignore, or deny, the links of oral contraceptives/abortifacients & surgical abortions to breast cancer, more young girls & women will be harmed, and more will die! Breast cancer is a terrible fire and, together, Koman & Planned Parenthood continue to fuel it. Do some homework- bcpinstitute.org

It's my understanding that Komen has their own policy against supporting organizations that are currently under federal investigation. Pulling their support from PP is in line with that policy. Private organizations have the right to make their own policies and abide by them. This is no one's decision but Komen's, regardless of whether you agree with it or not. At least they have the integrity to follow their own policy, regardless of where outside pressure comes from. Pro-lifers need to remember that Komen could just as easily restore funding to PP, as soon as the federal investigation is complete or is stopped. You can applaud the effect of their decision but understand that it was not made for purely pro-life reasons.

Just like all republicans. they believe life start at conception and stop at birth because they want to cut or stop all programs that would help young mothers who didnt want a child to begin with.

I think this link to three different pie charts does a great job illustrating how very differently facts about Planned Parenthood's activities can be presented, and how one pie chart will not tell the whole story:

This was suppose to be about breast cancer research and services for cancer prevention. There was to be no funding due to concern about supportting organizations that are under investigations for unethical/illegal conduct. Apparantly the abort group yelled foul. The data that I have seen and PP has agreed with is that abortions constitute the vast majority of monetary profits by PP. Problem I have is that 1) PP is a profit making organization that takes federal and state monies to increase their profit 2) They are not sufferring from lack of monies and yet are crying foul with political interference 3) Folks and organizations give them lots of money to make up supposed shortage of funds and 4) in past, they have not been truthful about accountability of taxpayer funds and donations. The knee-jerk response indicates questionable ethics on their behalf.

PP was created to control the expansion of the minority population (especially the African-American). China does it by limiting the amount of children a parent can have. I can't believe I'm force to support this atrocity .

My husband and I have walked with family and friends in the Race for the Cure many times. We will not support an organization that uses our contributions to kill unborn babies. The organization that claims to exist for the health of women is slaughtering unborn women every day by supporting Planned Parenthood. I always thought the funds went directly into breast cancer research. I will do more research before donating to any funds in the future.

3% of clients are there for abortions, but the key is the number is about 1/3 of all abortions performed in the country. The issue goes beyond that, counseling does not consider other alternatives, but more of what procedure will end the baby's life. One pro-choice friend of mine said the only counseling necessary is to determine which clinic to go to. Another p-c friend said about post-partum depression counselling that the client should just "get over it". These p-c clinics that claim to want to help desperate women,by these attitudes earn the term abortion mill.

I support people minding their own business. If you don't want to adopt theese unwanted kids, keep your ideas to yourself. Some folks have way to much time on their hands. Take care of your body and leave others alone. Most of you should join a gym and cut down obesity that's killing people
