Praisner, Wheaton, Silver Spring Libraries to Extend Sunday Hours

Beginning Sunday, Sept. 16, seven libraries will open earlier and close later on Sundays. Five branches will extend hours on weekdays.

They're not quite open 24 hours a day, but several branches of Montgomery County Public Libraries will soon offer more opportunities for county residents to use the services.

Beginning Sept. 16, seven branches, including Marilyn J. Praisner, Wheaton and Silver Spring, will extend Sunday hours, opening at 12 p.m. and closing at 5 p.m. Bethesda, Gaithersburg Interim (Lakeforest Mall), Germantown and Rockville Memorial will also have the same Sunday hours.

Five branches, Bethesda, Germantown, Quince Orchard, Rockville Memorial and Wheaton, will also extend hours on weekdays, going to a 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. schedule Mondays through Thursdays. Friday and Saturday hours, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., will remain the same for these branches.

What do you think: Will you use the library more with extended hours? Tell us in the comments.

Staff is already too stretched. They should not add these Sunday hours until they have the money to hire more staff. Frankly it's nuts. We don't need everything to be open all the time.

The county needs to add staffing to the libraries so they can all be open consistent hours during the week too. Some are closed some mornings, and none are open late enough in the evening.

I will definitely use the extended hours and agree with other commenters that: A. staff needs to be added and B. workday hours need to be consistent and extended past 9-5 work hour (plus commutes) times to be useful to more county taxpayers.
