Outlet stores?

This will #FAIL. If discount, low quality crap didn't sell before, what will outlet stores bring? And for some reason I have a hard time believing we will see big name brands like Polo or Nike in the mall which may have a shot. I just think this mall is rebranding itself as "the same crap as usual".

Mike- What do you think should happen in order for this to work?

The mall currently has a terrible vibe and a horrendous selection of stores. To succeed this new project needs to attract families in the area with money. To do that, they need to ensure that there aren't roaming bands of loud, obnoxious high school kids because that's a sure way to alienate families with younger kids. Also, the stores need to hire staff that are friendly and competent, which is currently not the case with a lot of the stores in City Place now.

If the mall is going to succeed there needs to be a balanced mix of stores. City Place needs more mainstream stores that will not only attract families, but also the working adults who take quick trips to the mall for a little lunchtime "shop-therapy", as well as those trendy and affordable stores like those that are in the mall today that cater to the young consumer. Beth, I agree with you on most of your points. However, you can't have a mall without teenagers. Teens have spending power too (who do you think is keeping the mall open in its current state?). A successful model for reviving City Place would be one that will be more inclusive and open to diversity, rather than one that looks to replace the current patrons, who by the way have proven to be loyal, with a few new faces who may not return after the Grand Re-Opening.

Well, we shall see. Don't like the proposed signage, looks like "The Foutlets at Silver Spring", and shouldn't it be IN Silver Spring? And just the word "Outlets" says "cheap, cheap, seconds, imports" to me. How about a decent anchor store, good food, coffee, services like dry cleaning, cobblers, pharmacy, etc.? When are those "in the [know]" going to start aiming higher in their attitude towards the residents of Silver Spring and visitors?

We are assuming the outlets will offer similar merchandise to what's already offered at the mall - but if we get outlets like you see at any of the Tangier outlets, I would be happy with that. I would love to see outlets such as Osh Kosh, Gymboree, Stride Rite, etc that are kid-focused, which will draw parents for the greater Washington area.

I think we are well-served with the cobblers, dry cleaners and pharmacies we already have in DTSS. We need more retail stores that appeal to both families and the large professional population that keeps our entire downtown busy during the workday.

My personal wish for this mall would be to turn as much street-frontage into retail as possible (shops should be accessible from Fenton Street, not just Ellsworth) and devote the upper 2-3 stories to a store like Target, which would attract walkers and drivers from a greater distance who could use the upper tiers of the Ellsworth Parking Garage for immediate access. Then surrender the interior of the mall, which is dreary, to office space - medical or otherwise, or maybe a bowling alley? The idea of an interior mall runs counter to the intention of DTSS, so do away with it and repurpose the inside into some function that doesn't require a great deal of street-frontage or pedestrian traffic to populate it.

The original lineup of stores when CP opened was much better. I loved it when Nordstrom Rack was there. I am open to anything that will improve the paltry offerings there now.

I also loved it when Nordstrom Rack was there and was crushed when they left- back then, apparently, the demographics weren't right and they weren't getting enough business. I was there constantly:-)

Outlets will be a total failure even if the owners actually get a plan together and execute. They should do some renovations and beg retailers like Target, Best Buy, Dave & Busters, and Bed, Bath & Beyond to move in.

Personally, I wish Montgomery County would purchase it and make it a community athletic center. Pools, raquetball courts, olympic-sized ice rink, and perhaps a bowling center would really improve the DTSS experience and attract families and many new businesses.

and surely you dont mean for the entire 5floors to be an athletic center? no way would that generate enough revenue.

This mall is full of dope heads drug dealers the police needs to be more on top of this place and take out all those people that are harming the place. The mall sucks!!! There only indain cheap crappy stores and nasty food. Ugh this mall needs to.be renovated 100%
