Series of Airbag Thefts Near Forest Glen Metro
Police said Hondas, Accuras and Toyotas were targeted.
Airbags were stolen from eight vehicles overnight on streets surrounding the Forest Glen Metro station on Thursday, Feb. 14, according to a report from the Montgomery County police 3rd District.
Between 2 a.m. and 8:05 a.m., the airbags of Honda, Acura and Toyota make vehicles were broken into and the airbags were taken, police said. Reports came from vehicles parked on Georgia Avenue, Churchill Road, Bonnywood Lane, Blundon Road, Clark Place, Granville Road and Belvedere Boulevard.
No arrests have been reported in association with the thefts.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau estimates that 50,000 air bags are stolen every year—that's about a $50 million value, according to a State Farm fact sheet on air bag theft. The market for stolen air bags is driven by the need to replace a car's air bag if it deploys in a crash, State Farm wrote.
