Seventy Pepco Customers Say No to Smart Meters

Pepco said customers opting out won't get a smart meter installed, and those who already have one installed, can get their old meter back.

As of Monday morning, 70 Pepco customers have submitted written requests to opt out of their smart meters, according to Myra Oppel, Pepco spokesperson.

"If they already had their meters installed, we will go and switch out that meter," Oppel said, explaining that Pepco will put back in a traditional manual-read meter.

Pepco will defer the installation of a smart meter once a written request is made to the company to keep the existing meter, according to Oppel.

In addition to the 70 requests, Pepco has received phone calls about the smart meters, according to Oppel, who did not have the number of calls at press time.

Pepco's actions are temporary, pending a final decision on opt-outs by the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC).

On May 24, the Maryland PSC issued an order telling Pepco, Baltimore Gas & Electric, and Delmarva Power, “the utilities shall refrain from installing a smart meter in the home or business of any customer who notifies the utility in writing that they do not wish to have a smart meter installed.”

The order also prohibited the utility companies from activating smart meters already installed, should they receive a written request from a customer.

Smart meters are devices that send information about household energy use to a power company via electromagnetic radiation. A smart meter replaces a traditional electricity meter, which a power company representative must visit every month to get a electricity usage reading.

Smart meters can make it easier for power companies to know about power outages, and they can help customers track their energy use at different times of the day. But, some object to the electromagnetic radiation they emit, and would prefer that such devices stay away from their homes and families, Patch reported earlier this spring.

But Pepco says the meters do not pose a health risk. Pepco and Delmarva Power support the position that radio frequency exposure from smart meters is far below and less frequent than other common electric devices, such as cell phones and baby monitors.

Customers still wishing to opt out, can send in a written request or fill out an online form.

How to Opt Out

Customers wishing to opt out, can do so by submitting an online form.

Or, they may send a written request to:

I am pleased that Pepco is allowing customers who already have a smart meter, to remove the smart meter.

Research shows there are biological effects associated with exposure to microwave radiation emitted from smart meters. In May 2011, the World Health Organization determined that microwave radiation is a possible human carcinogen. In April, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine recommended caution with smart meter installations. It issued a position paper entitled, Electromagnetic and Radiofrequency Fields Effect on Human Health. According to the report, “Multiple studies correlate RF exposure with diseases such as cancer, neurological disease, reproductive disorders, immune dysfunction, and electromagnetic hypersensitivity….. many in vitro, in vivo and epidemiological studies demonstrate that significant harmful biological effects occur from non‐thermal RF exposure.

Moreover, smart meters raise privacy concerns. According to a Feby 2012 Congressional Research Service Report, Smart Meter: Privacy and Cybersecurity, the Department of Energy reported that by matching data with known appliance load signatures, smart meters will be able to reveal people’s daily schedules, their appliances and electronic equipment, and whether they use certain types of medical equipment.

Electricity rates will increase with recently approved dynamic pricing schedules to be used with smart meters.

Good lord. I think Pepco is incompetent and borderline evil but if you're worried about this I hope you've removed the wireless routers from your homes, since they put out a lot more electromagnetic cooties than a smart meter and transmit a lot more private data.

And American Academy of Environmental Medicine also wants to ban fluoride and is not exactly a fountain of scientific respectability. http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/environmental-medicine/

An executive director of a 501(c)3 organization has no business going on a hate mongering radio station -- period. Christine Hoch at the very least chose unwise company.

The Center For Safer Wireless, ostensibly an established to educate the public on wireless safety, is a pseudoscience, quack organization that misinforms the public.

By promoting conspiracy theories about wireless industry and government, they inevitably cross paths with hard-core 9/11 and zionist conspiracy theorists. The appearance on Spingola's hate radio station is a consequence of reckless accusations.

Um, light is electromagnetic radiation. Those towers between Westchester drive and Amherst off 193? EMR. You are reacting to the word radiation as if it is a bad thing. If you heat a pot of water, it is giving off EMR in the form of Infrared Radiation. It just so happens that a certain tiny fraction of the spectrum resonates with things like water, in the same way a certain tiny fraction resonates with the cells in your eyes.

Wrong, you should probably stop misinforming people and take a chemistry class. Molecular vibrations typically occur in the infrared. Molecular rotations will typically occur in the microwave region (dipole only molecules such as water). While the vast majority of these interactions will result in very small effects, non ionizing radiation does effect molecules.

@Things
This has to do with that flouride statement. Regardless whether Flouride has benefit or not, it is not ethical to treat patients who may not want it. There is no way to track dose. Some people drink more water than others. It was a noble idea, but it really wasn't implemented the way it should have been. If they want to do it, force it on the kids in the schools in specific doses and allow patients to opt out.

I will also say that I'm not so sure that the effects of these are doing everything people are claiming. But ill be damned if I'm going to be the one claiming money 10 years down the road because of some cancer that this shit has caused. If it was banned in other countries I'd like to see the studies PEPCO has conducted showing that those countries were wrong in banning it.

With all of the reports in the news of linking cell phones to brain cancer, I don't know anyone using a cell phone 'stuck to their ear'. Most people heed the warnings when something is found to be a health risk. Now, a difference between cell phones and SMeters is the fact that cell phones are OPTIONAL and SMeters aren't (for now) despite Federal law proscribing them as such. And, you can turn off your cell phone, keep it away from your body etc - take precautions. You cannot do that with a SMeter. It is more exposure than cell phones and whole body exposure.

Smart Meter Dangers: The Health Hazards of Wireless Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure
The Latest from Dr. David O. Carpenter

"With broken and unethical global social mores, this is considered standard business practice: to deceive customers, while gaining enormous profits. As long as a “revolving-door” policy remains between corporations and [no longer] public agencies, citizens will not have their medically validated concerns ever addressed. The corporate bottom line, profit, is what counts –not our well-being and safety. Further, the synergistic effects of various wireless technologies combined with other environmental toxins to which we all are exposed daily have not been tested."

Last month Pepco replaced three smart meters in our small mixed use building in DC. The next electric bills that all three people received were several times higher than any previous Pepco bill. Pepco admitted that they took the final reading from the dumb meters on the day the meters were replaced. Now they are doing an investigation.

80% of households with Smart Meters has seen an increase - sometimes 2-3x as much. In other parts of MD, the Smart Meter project is to cost about $5-700M and the other utility (BGE) received $200M (more than Pepco) from the DOE. Who do YOU think will make up the difference?

This new technology seems to be disguising the real agenda which is to come up with new ways to increase our monthly utility bill. As we all strive to cut our energy footprint, the utility companies need to make up for lost revenue so they come up with new creative ways to relieve us of our hard earned money. P G County loves this as well because they take their cut based on the utility bill. As we use less, we pay more. Ahh, the real cost of progress!

I think the smart meters will be a good idea for smart billing. Rates increase during high-demand hours and decrease during low-demand hours. This would result in trends where people start doing their laundry and similar type of activities during low-demand time. This actually could end up being a major part of the solution to our energy problems since we will be distributing demand of electric power throughout the day instead of peaking demand for a few hours during the day and then idling the power stations for most of the time.

Anton in Hyattsville is attempting to do laundry at the same time his thermostat is on 72! Dear leader tells us that "we all can have our house set at 72". Our electricity grid has basically been unchanged for more than half a century. It is inefficient, subject to outages where the power company has no clue how to find without people calling. It rewards people who are wasteful in their energy usage at high-demand parts of the day, which means more electricity capacity has to be built to meet that demand, which means the rates go up.

Pepco, with all of it's faults, is a regulated private company. The regulators review the rate schedule and Pepco's costs to ensure that Pepco is charging rates that are fair and reasonable. If you don't like your rates, call your regulator.

Meanwhile, these same people complain when the power goes out during a storm AND complain when the power company trims trees to make sure that the lines are clear.

As far as the radiation hazard, you are living in a fantasy world if you don't think you are already being bombarded...

The Electric Power Company does not need Smart Meters to tell them where the power outages may exists. There are rate payers on the other end and they have telephones.
Regarding your comment of people being wasteful with their energy, does not hold to economic logic. Particularly at times of economic distress as the world is experiencing as we speak, and for an extended period of time.

The Link Below will help you remediable your ignorance regarding "Radiation Hazards" and prove to every other reader of this thread that it is YOU that is Living in a "Fantasy World".

http://www.emrpolicy.org/science/forum/laibrussels.pdf

"Unlike the conditions in most previous research on the biological effects of RFR
in which whole body exposure was studied, the effects of cellular telephone-related
exposure involve repeated exposure with variable durations of a relatively constant
amount of body tissue (i.e., part of the head). In considering the biological effects of
RFR, the intensity and frequency of the radiation and exposure duration are important determinants of the responses.
For repeated exposure, as in the case of the use of cellular telephones, homeostatic compensatory response can occur.
On the other hand, since a relatively constant amount of body tissue is exposed, cumulative effect could occur and lead to an eventual breakdown of homeostasis and adverse health consequences.
Data from some of the experiments described below do suggest that RFR effects are cumulative over time.

If you want to understand why people are concerned about how some Smart Meters communicate, here is one possible reason:

Attached is a screenshot from the last 15 seconds of the following video:

Here is a YouTube video that has some of the same content (apparently posted by the production company that made the above video):

Where is the evidence that Karolinska has issues a "GLOBAL HEALTH ALERT?" Why would a prestigious research organization squirrel the document on scribd instead of its own website? NICE TRY Save for the proceedings being listed by NIH as an abstract where another six practitioners in the field are co-signers. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21268443

In November, 2009, a scientific panel met in Seletun, Norway, for three days of intensive discussion on existing scientific evidence and public health implications of the unprecedented global exposures to artificial electromagnetic fields (EMF). EMF exposures (static to 300 GHz) result from the use of electric power and from wireless telecommunications technologies for voice and data transmission, energy, security, military and radar use in weather and transportation. The Scientific Panel recognizes that the body of evidence on EMF requires a new approach to protection of public health; the growth and development of the fetus, and of children; and argues for strong preventative actions. New, biologically-based public exposure standards are urgently needed to protect public health worldwide.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22263702
Brain proteome response following whole body exposure of mice to mobile phone or wireless DECT base radiation.

ABSTRACT .............. Comparative proteomics analysis revealed that long-term irradiation from both EMF sources altered significantly (p < 0.05) the expression of 143 proteins in total (as low as 0.003 fold downregulation up to 114 fold overexpression). Several neural function related proteins (i.e., Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), Alpha-synuclein, Glia Maturation Factor beta (GMF), and apolipoprotein E (apoE)), heat shock proteins, and cytoskeletal proteins (i.e., Neurofilaments and tropomodulin) are included in this list as well as proteins of the brain metabolism (i.e., Aspartate aminotransferase, Glutamate dehydrogenase) to nearly all brain regions studied. Western blot analysis on selected proteins confirmed the proteomics data. The observed protein expression changes may be related to brain plasticity alterations, indicative of oxidative stress in the nervous system or involved in apoptosis and might potentially explain human health hazards reported so far, such as headaches, sleep disturbance, fatigue, memory deficits, and brain tumor long-term induction under similar exposure conditions.

@FRANK.
IT GOES PRECISELY to the TECHNOLOGY!

A simple meter reading of an analog meter, because of the CONVOLUTED DIGITAL technology, to get to the bottom of the Error, One has to BE a FORENSIC INVESTIGATOR, to collect , (If the utility will release) the ACTUAL METERING DATA, ANALYSE and try to figure out what happened.

This AUSTRALIAN GUY, IS and Electrical Engineer, an ANALYST, Investigator by background, and to MY UNDERSTANDING he still has not gotten to the bottom of it or find a successful resolution.

IF an ANALOG METER was standing as a GATE KEEPER between HIM and The ELECTRIC COMPANY!
NONE of these problems would be taking place.

People FRANK, want to go about their LIVES and not spend their time monitoring the electric company and how it is operating.

KEEP IT SIMPLE and SWEET works here BEST, if it has worked anywhere.

SMART METERS have ONE and ONLY ONE APPLICATION....To keep the ratepayer, bemused , befuddled and bewildered and and ABOVE ALL under TECHNOCRATIC CONTROL!

George Karadimas

2:07 pm on Friday, June 22, 2012

Frank
Watch the video where he demonstrates the the metering data printout, and the discrepancy between the reported and calculated KwHours and If you Bother to watch closely you will see that the discrepancy goes BOTH ways.

Instances where the meter is reporting ZERO use and there is a KWHour charge with it.
Instances where the meter is reporting USAGE and the Charge is calculated at ZERO.

BTW if it is such a simple problem with the smart meters ...Why is it still festering?? and the Australian ratepayer Ombudsman is Hiding under his desk?

With and analog meter in place this would never have happened.

A simple Monthly reading and an even simpler calculations based on the usage rate.

Smart metering has ONE PURPOSE ....rate Usage OBFUSCATION and RATEPAYER subjugation by the Electric company.

You know the saying!.... To Foul UP things Royally, IT takes a computer!
And Now you got one on your smart meter.

Quack!

The article was authored "Safe School Committee," an anti-wireless extremist group.

"On May 23, 2012, Women’s College Hospital hosted a workshop and invited physicians, experts and patients to share and discuss ideas related to EMS."

So they can fleece more money from their gullible patients.

"Dr. Riina Bray, their Medical Director, said, “We need to create more awareness about this condition. Health-care practitioners need to better understand EMS so they can help their patients prevent and manage their symptoms..."

Yup, more money for nothing.

"Among the experts invited was Dr. Magda Havas Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource Studies, Trent University. During her talk... also mentioned the guidelines recently released by the >>>Austrian Medical Association<<< on how to diagnose and treat electrosmog-related illnesses."

Magda Havas -- of course -- and touting the mysterious Austrian Medical Association.

The collection of smart meters in my neighborhood is repelling the very sun! The largest source of radiation in our solar system! Coincidence? I think not. This is obviously part of a multigovernmental conspericy to bless us with perfect temperate weather for Rosh Hashanah and continue the war on Christmas by cursing it with bitter cold! On top of all that, the massive amount of radiation put out by the meters have caused an oppressive heat wave to set in with no break in sight. This is forcing me to run my AC constantly! "Pepco says smart meters aren't a health risk." Too bad that AAEM, a national environmental physicians' association for over 50 years, disagrees. For this and other authoritative pubic health alerts about smart meters see http://www.electrosmogprevention.org/category/public-health-alert/. I'd say Pepco is itching for lawsuits with a statement like that, that is totally unsupported by current independent science. Everyone, opt-out. No one would have one of the smart meters on their property if they truly understood how their privacy is invaded, the financial risks and moreso in future plans, how insecure the smart meters and smart grid is (read http://www.recovery.gov/Accountability/inspectors/Documents/OAS-RA-12-04.pdf), and how dangerous for health smart meters are. The only benefits are to the company, Petco, in this case. Of course, the wireless industry engineers who helped cause this disaster will undoubtedly deny it - but what could you expect from the perpetrators? The truth? If they knew it, we'd not be in this situation. For the science behind the harm of smart meters, go to www.smartmeterdangers.org - read what authoritative, independent scientists and experts say.

For a smart meter technical report (one of three) by a major CA utility that was ordered by an administrative law judge for the CPUC, that shows the pulsing is near constant, every few seconds, like a strobe, to maintain the mesh network, go to http://lamesa.patch.com/blog_posts/revealed-sdge-smart-meter-technical-data-and-bio-effects-of-microwave-radiation. The utilities are all using lies of omission when they are averaging total daily DATA TRANSMISSION vs. the high level pulsing which is all day long. The article above goes into that. All three of the major utilities had to produce this information when ordered to do so, and this exposed their previous misrepresentations, which other utilities around the country are still using. Corporate lies and corporations paying big bucks to keep the lies going, just didn't work when enough Californians raised heck about it and got involved. That is why the people in Maryland are being targeted in this discussion, to snuff out the truth, they likely think you will be passive and they'll get away with this outrage. Don't fall for the lies. To look up the three proceedings and the Nov. 1, 2011 Response of the 3 utilities to the data requests (which will be essentially the same as your utility's plan in MD) enter "CPUC proceeding (number)" with one of these numbers, in a search engine. You can read all the documents then.

Thank you George for all your hard work! I greatly appreciate it.

Another aspect to smart meter technology is the ability to work with other agencies to punish individuals with power interuptions for a myriad of activities they prefer us citizens to comply with. New Mexico is one example of this. Too many unpaid traffic camera citations issued and the power company will *with the click of the mouse* cut you off from the grid using smart meter technology.

This is just the tip of the ice berg.

George, that paper which you linked is the basis for the video that we watched. And it also lacks an explanation or even a hypothesis as to how non-ionizing radio waves impart an effect on cells.

Surely you have a rudimentary grasp of how your theory works. I'll even help and give you a quick version of how ionizing radiation damages cells:

Ionizing radiation excites atoms and electrons which can shoot through cellular structures like a bullet through a pumpkin, destroying the very building blocks of life–DNA.

Non ionizing radiation does not do that. Radio transmitters do not broadcast an ionizing signal. Therefore, the question must become: how does non-ionizing radiation impart an effect on cells?

Why Smart Meters Might Be a Dumb Idea.
..............."Smart meters can measure electricity use in real time and, therefore, will immediately allow electric companies to determine peak-use times. As a result, electric companies could charge different rates for the power that you use at different times of the day—and on different days. In general, you can expect rates to be the highest during peak-demand times, such as the afternoon on the hottest summer days of the year, and to remain the same as they are now or even to drop at other times. To put these rates into place, electric companies will need the approval of the state public utility commission and will have to notify customers in advance.
Despite a backlash over the prospect of time-of-use rates by consumer groups and even a few state utility commissions, it’s difficult for us to see how time-of-use rates are anything but inevitable. The whole premise of smart-meter benefits relies on getting consumers to pay strict attention to how much electricity that they use and when they use it, smart-meter advocates say. And to make that happen, electric companies seem determined to swing a stick at consumers rather than to dangle a carrot"..............http://www.consumersdigest.com/special-reports/why-smart-meters-might-be-a-dumb-idea/P3

Continued...."That’s great news for the companies that make the hardware and software for devices that will monitor and help you to control your electricity but lousy news for consumers who don’t buy the equipment. These consumers will risk having their electricity bills go through the roof when electric companies charge potentially five to 10 times more for electricity when power demand peaks on the 10 or so hottest days of the year, as seen in pilot tests of time-of-use rates.

If you don’t fork over the money to buy the equipment that allows you to monitor your energy consumption, use remote controls to turn your air conditioner on and off or buy appliances that have embedded smart chips that are designed to work with home-monitoring systems, your $200- or $300-per-month summer electricity bill could, as a consequence, easily become a $400 or $600 monthly drain on your wallet."

X-SMs

7:38 am on Wednesday, June 27, 2012

"experts say even the most basic system to monitor home-electricity use likely will cost from $400 to $500, so you’ll feel a pinch either way. Consumer groups still hold out hope that electric companies will abandon time-of-use rates in favor of other incentives, such as rebates or monthly credits for customers who reduce their electricity use during peak times with the help of an in-home monitoring system. For instance, Maryland Public Service Commission has blocked time-of-use rates for now and says electric companies that have implemented smart-meter technology should offer rebates instead of punitive rate increases. And Maryland regulators say electric companies should allow consumers to opt in on such incentives and give those who opt in clear instructions on how to best monitor their electricity use.
Yet even rebate incentives could pose problems for everyone in an extreme scenario. What happens, for instance, if most people eventually use smartmeter monitoring to reduce their energy use? Electricity use would go down, and electric companies that don’t generate their own power could claim victory for the smartmeter system, because they would spend less to buy electricity from other sources. But electric companies that generate their own power might be forced to raise the rates that they charge consumers to make sure that they cover their fixed costs.
In other words, if the smart-meter system works too well, your rates might go up anyway depending on where you live."

However you do think someone should be criticized for working in a technology company.

That really says something about your values and concern for humanity. If you had an moral fiber, you would remove all references to Ms. Hoch's organization until receiving an apology and acceptable explanation. Ms Hoch's creepy response that the hate-mongering host is a proponent of "alternative medicine" should disgust just about everyone.

As far as 1-2 studies, we have not even gotten that far. You have no clue about what a study says, nor its validity, and you completely lack the capacity for critical thought. You do not examine the organizations behind these studies -- you just assume if they share your narrow viewpoint they must be good.

And I notice that the Karolinska statement, which by now is impossible to defend, remains on your website. Have you found Olle Johansson's letter posted as an example of quality research on any reputable scientific website? I am still waiting to see that.

As far as producing, yes, you do produce much misinformation, disinformation, hyperbole, falsehoods and quackery. I will offer that praise.

..."PG&E found that only 25,000 of its more than 3 million customers who have smart meters have bothered to sign up for a discount that they can receive if they use smart-meter data to trim their electricity use. That’s less than 1 percent of all users! Of course, the smart-meter industry is betting that compliance will improve after electric companies introduce stronger rate incentives.

All in all, the potential benefits that the smart-meter industry is desperate to achieve—or at least make you believe is possible—seem to be theoretical at best. If the success of the smart-meter transition is based on consumers saving money and energy in the long run, we can’t help but imagine that it could take decades for that to happen—if it ever does.

And make no mistake: Smart meters and all of their negative consequences are coming. When they arrive, consumers once again will realize that they have little power."

SMART GRID Security Concerns.
Because there is enhanced communication between utilities and homes and businesses, there is the potential for security breaches. The technology for smart grids is still in its infancy, and there is a fear that hackers can hack into the system in much the same way they could hack into personal computers before advancements in home computer security. This would allow hackers to control meters at homes and businesses.

"Because the utilities and the meters in homes and businesses will be more intimately linked, there is the potential for the utilities to collect personal information, which can be seen as an invasion of privacy. Information about electricity usage will be collected as well as other information such as the types of appliances in the homes. Data collected about electricity usage could, for example, be used to determine when people are not at home, making the homes easy targets of theft."

"Smart grid power systems use digital technology to deliver electricity. They are being rolled out in the U.S. Though they are promoted as a means to create energy savings, some problems exist with this technology. Some of the problems inherent in smart grid power systems include customer privacy problems, security problems, grid volatility and inflexibility. Implementing a smart grid power system has considerable implications for personal privacy because the grid has the ability to control power access. Security experts believe that this technology may allow someone other than the customer to control the power supply."

http://www.grid-net.com/smarter-grid
"Mesh-based metering systems promise the barely adequate delivery of six-hour-old data to the utility and day-old data to their consumers. Furthermore, today’s Advanced Metering (AMI) and Demand Response (DR) applications are typically proprietary and stand-alone implementations, which makes them costly to integrate into the back office and even more difficult to coordinate in the field. Security is almost always an afterthought. Needless to say, this approach is ill-prepared and insufficient for the demands of an always-on smarter grid."

@Frank
Story at-a-glance
"If you’re pregnant, there is compelling evidence that you may want to use extreme caution when using a cell phone
An animal study by Yale researchers suggests that the increasingly prevalent neurobehavioral disorders in children -- conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) -- may be related to exposure to radiofrequency radiation from cell phones while in the womb
Past studies have also linked pregnant women’s use of cell phones to their babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships by the time they reached school age
As long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call. If you're pregnant, keeping your cell phone turned off, and avoiding or reducing your cell phone use may be especially important to the health of your offspring
Radiation from wireless devices is biologically active in a myriad of ways, including damaging DNA. There is no good reason to take the many risks of exposing unborn fetuses, or infants and children of any age, to this radiation"

The Yale article was the subject of much ridicule in the scientific community. If you read the comments of the Yale article, you will find it debunked by two scientists -- here is an excerpt:

"Finally, it should be realised that in ?receive? mode the battery provides current to the circuitry, which in turn creates an extremely low-frequency (ELF) magnetic field: the handsets also are warmer to the touch than a ?deactivated? phone (presumably one turned off). These are just two of many possible confounding exposures. However, whatever led to neurobehavioral disorders in this study was unlikely to be RF and the thus the main conclusion is likely to be in error."

Flawed Testing & Skewed Data
It's a shame that CTV – owned by Bell Canada, used a flawed testing protocol to misinform the public about the “low” level of Wi-Fi radiation, in the name of “investigative journalism”.

Who Should Be Deciding Risk—Engineers or Experts in Biology?
"As Joel Moskowitz, PhD of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health has pointed out in “Does the FCC Plan to Rubber Stamp Outdated Cell Phone Radiation Standards?”, the FCC’s recent statement that it intends to review the safety guidelines for RF radiation–but has already made up its mind that the guidelines are adequate–is of very great concern.

That the FCC is finally again reviewing the guidelines after a decade and a half since 1996 may seem on the surface like progress, as groups including ElectromagneticHealth.org have called for the FCC to revisit its exposure guidelines for years. (See EMF Petition to Congress, with thousands of endorsers from every state in the nation asking that the FCC review its guidelines). But should we be celebrating? It’s uncertain. Some smell a rat in this latest announcement." ...........

Electromagnetic Fields and Leakage of the Blood Brain Barrier: Dr. Leif Salford
Posted on June 18, 2012
"The following video is a presentation of Dr. Leif Salford, neurosurgeon and researcher, discussing his animal studies on radio frequency radiation and its effects on the brain. ”Dr. Salford,” writes Arthur Firstenberg in his paper Silent Wireless Spring, ”exposed over 1600 experimental animals to low level microwave radiation. Their results were consistent and worrisome: microwave radiation. . ..caused the blood-brain barrier . . .to leak.” (It was repeated in 2003 on 32 additional animals; they waited this time 8 weeks before “sacrificing them”–and found “up to two percent of the neurons in all areas of the brain were shrunken and degenerated.”Dr. Salford, says Firstenberg, called the ”potential implications ‘terrifying.’” " ..........

"Safety of Advanced Metering Infrastructure in Victoria" (Australia) May 17, 2012
Don Maisch, PhD, Recommendations for Draft Report on Smart Grid

"Thank you for providing the opportunity to make comments on the draft report. The ongoing controversy over the introduction of smart grids, specifically the safety of wireless smart meters in relation to possible adverse health effects has been a topic of interest for me for some time now.

"This interest stems from my involvement in telecommunications frequency standard setting since the early 1990s, initially as a science writer for Senator Robert Bell in Tasmania, then later as a public-interest committee member on the Standards Australia TE/7 Committee: Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields. As a result of my various writings on the topic, in 1993 I commenced a PhD candidature at the University of Wollongong, NSW with my chosen area of research being an examination of the history of telecommunications frequency standard setting. This encompassed the radiofrequency/microwave spectrum, hereafter referred to as electromagnetic radiation (EMR). " ....................

ITRON allowed to certify safety (Really?)
"It is highly unusual, and concerning, that the distributor of a device is allowed to perform testing which normally is done by an independent body, such as the CSA or UL. Hydro is not required to have its equipment certified, but this is not just a piece of equipment that will be used in the field or placed on a power pole. This will be put on my home, near the head of my bed. Therefore, I demand that I be provided with a full, complete, and unedited copy of any and all safety tests that have been performed by ITRON, BC Hydro, or any of agents acting on their behalf."

THE DANGERS OF THE NON-IONIZING RF KITTY, IS OUT OF THE BAG IN RUSSIA.
Note: ONLY FRANK wants it be kept a secret!

"Wi Fi recommendations from the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (RNCNIRP)"
"June 19, 2012
Moscow, Russia
RUSSIAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE ON NON-IONIZING RADIATION PROTECTION
Recommendations of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection of the necessity to regulate strictly the use of Wi-Fi in kindergartens and schools

Mobile cellular communication is getting more popular among children of different ages. Children excel adult population in the mobile phone calls use. At the same time, there is a daily brain exposure of EMF RF. In addition, all children are constantly exposed of EMF RF from base stations. The problem of the children’s health maintenance in the development of wireless communications was set up as priority by World Health Organization.

Electromagnetic radiation from Wi-Fi creates an additional burden for the child brain, whose body is in a state of development and the formation of mental activity. During this period, children are most susceptible to adverse environmental factors (WHO, publication number 3, April 2003).

It is necessary to note that the existing standards have been developed, without consideration of this additional exposure of EMF." ..............

Cell Phone Radiation Damages Sperm, Studies Show
"Phones Carried on Belt or in Pants Pocket May Harm Reproductive Health
Although most scientific and public attention on the issue of the safety of cell phone radiation has focused on evidence suggesting an increased risk of brain tumors (Baan 2011), a little-noticed but growing body of research points to a new concern – sperm damage (La Vignera 2012).
In a comprehensive review of the published scientific literature, the Environmental Working Group found 10 human studies that have identified a startling variety of changes in sperm exposed to cell phone radiation. In the most striking findings, men who carried their phones in a pocket or on the belt were more likely to have lower sperm counts and/or more inactive or less mobile sperm. These findings accord with similar results in laboratory animals.
Collectively, the research indicates that exposure to cell phone radiation may lead to decreases in sperm count, sperm motility and vitality, as well as increases in indicators of sperm damage such as higher levels of reactive oxygen species (chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen), oxidative stress, DNA damage and changes in sperm morphology (see summary below).
Many men who talk on a cell phone using a Bluetooth device or other headset keep the phone in a pants pocket or clipped to a holster." ......... For the Full Story Click Below.

Electromagnetichealth.org is a disreputable quack site. Among the people quoted are William Rea, who was brought up on charges by the Texas Medical Board, and a host of others who are not scientists. It is a scaremongering site created by an MBA who will profit from scaring people.

I'm still waiting for:

1) Christine and CFSW to apologize for and explain her appearance on the anti-semitic radio show.
2) Traci to end support for CFSW until the apology and explanation.
3) Traci to produce a statement from Karolinska on their website declaring a "Global Health Warning."
4) Susan -- who claims her opponents lie as her website sells unproven or worthless EMF protection -- to produce some reliable link to the Austrian Medical Association (national) and its call for a "Smart Meter Halt." There are three likely explanations:

a) The organization does not exist.
b) The organization exists but is not respected as a medical group.
c) The organization exists but did not make the remark attributed to it.

William Rea, M.D. Settles Charges by the Texas Medical Board
http://www.casewatch.org/board/med/rea/order.shtml
"In August 2010, the Texas Medical Board approved a mediated agreed order under which William J. Rea, M.D. must revise the form he uses to obtain consent to treat patients with injections of environmental substances. The order was based upon Rea's failure to obtain informed consent from five patients diagnosed with chemical sensitivity and/or environmental sensitivity. During the investigation, Rea testified that a "car exhaust" solution he used for injections was so dilute that only an "electromagnetic imprint" of the original active substances remained.. The revised consent form, also shown below, must state that (a) his injections contain only the “electromagnetic imprint” of the agents in question, (b) the therapy is not FDA-approved, and (c) the therapeutic value of the therapy is disputed. In addition, he must not start using any formulations that contain any amounts of substances classified as hazardous or carcinogenic by the Environmental Protection Agency or any other federal or state regulatory agency."

SMART METERS:The WONDERS and DIS-ADVANTAGES to the ratepayers!
"Last year, Dominion Resources, a competitive electricity supplier, turned 8,000 residential PPL customers back to the utility after their contracts had expired because it learned from the smart-meter data that the customers used a disproportionate amount of power during the day, when it costs more to supply.
"They dropped the least profitable customers, and sent them back to PPL," said Popowsky.
As the default service provider, PPL was required to resume supplying power to the customers, so the customer were never shut off. But Popowsky said he was troubled by the company's action. "They could be elderly customers who are home all the time and need the air-conditioner on during the day," he said.
The PUC is looking into the practice, said a utility commission spokeswoman."

For another example of how people are paid to go on discussion boards about smart meters to disrupt the conversation, read this (CPUC Proceeding): PG&E Wants to Limit Info re: “Alleged Spying on Anti-Smart Meter Activists” Case http://www.electrosmogprevention.org/stop-ca-smart-meter-news/pge-wants-to-limit-info-re-alleged-spying-on-anti-smart-meter-activists-case/. "On May 21, 2012, Pacific Gas and Electric, a large CA utility, filed the above motion with the CPUC to limit the personal information regarding its employees (former and current) to be made available to the public in the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) investigation of alleged spying on several leading anti-smart meter activist groups in California. This motion reveals discovery information related to the proceeding, allegedly showing how one of their executives infiltrated and participated in anti-smart meter discussion groups under an assumed name." We see this happening on this discussion as well, it mirrors that one.

Susan could contribute positively to this discussion by providing authoritative links to the Austrian Medical Association (national) to buttress her claim that highly respected medical organizations claim harmful effects from smart meters.

Yet she refuses.

Instead, she prefers to hurl unsubstantiated accusations of secret payments about those who oppose her. And she does this in spite of her association with an anti-wireless website that promotes EMF protection gear and solicits donations. Now who really stands to gain financially from their activity on this discussion?

We get no answers from Susan, only unfounded accusations and advertisement for a website which capitalizes on the fear she generates.

Doubts cast over consumer benefits of smart meters

"SPECIAL REPORT / The European Commission has asked member states to present before September their cost-benefit analyses on the deployment of smart meters that could lead to 80% of consumers being equipped with intelligent metering systems by 2020. But a recent study casts doubts over their cost-effectiveness and the benefits they bring to consumers.
Smart meters record energy or water consumption, sending the readings back to the power or water suppliers for monitoring and billing. A cost-benefit analysis currently deployed in member states will be finalised by 3 September 2012.

In a recommendation paper, the European Commission says it is yet to be convinced that smarts meters are “economically justified”.
The EU executive's doubts are being raised despite an increased acceptance of smart meters across European countries. In Italy and Sweden, smart meters cover almost 100% of households.

However, a recently published study of the Free University in Brussels (ULB) commissed by the European Consumers Organisation BEUC, found that consumers are not the main beneficiaries of this technology, calling current efforts “a missed opportunity” for end-users.
“Smart meters might be beneficial to some consumers, but we certainly have doubts about whether they will be beneficial to all consumers,” Johannes Kleis of BEUC told EurActiv."
