SHA: Stay Off the Roads Early Thursday

Icy conditions could occur at the onset of the morning rush hour.

The Maryland State Highway Administration strongly urges motorists to avoid traveling early Thursday morning, especially before dawn.

"Stay off the roads early [Thursday] morning, so that SHA crews have the opportunity to proactively treat roadways before morning rush hour," SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a news release. "When you step out and see ice on your doorstep, you can assume that roads will be icy as well. Also remember that conditions can change rapidly within just a few miles, and we ask motorists to remain on guard and exercise extreme caution tonight and tomorrow morning."

The SHA warns that those traveling during inclement weather and poor conditions pose a threat to themselves, first responders and other drivers. Disabled vehicles should be moved from the travel lane to the shoulder.

Keep track of up-to-date road conditions by clicking the "commute" option under the "more stuff" tab on the front page of your local Patch site.

Tell that to our workplaces?
It's not like the commute Wed morning was enjoyable.

I can hear the phone call now. "The SHA told me not to travel, so I won't be in until later. Sorry." That would have gone over well.

There was no ice when I left for work at 6:30 this morning. Although I work at a school HCPS keep offices open after Christmas so I had no choice in staying home. Many workplaces these days don't even give you any leeway even if there's an "official announcement."

Well clearly this morning wound up being a false alarm for anyone east of Frederick, but it's tough to predict the air and surface temps correctly several hours out. And while I agree employers aren't always the most logical folks when it comes to travel, at least the warning lets you know that it might be a rough commute. (Unlike Wednesday, when much of the area was caught bu surprise by lower than expected temps when it started).
