Silver Spring Nonprofits Offer Shelter From the Storm

How social service providers are caring for those in need.

After news of Hurricane Irene’s path coming up the east coast, residents of Silver Spring have been readily preparing their homes to weather the coming storm. With residents in the mindset of creating a safe harbor for their families, an unsettling question emerges: How are homeless families going to cope?

Sheperd's Table- located on 8210 Colonial Ln # A offers their service to homeless and hungery families- seems to be standing its ground despite threats of the category 1 hurricane, which has caused the state of .

John Eckenrode, Director of Social Services for Shepard's Table says they will still be serving meals.

“For the people who are going to be getting into the emergency shelters starting tomorrow we will be open every night serving dinner and our resource center will also be open…we are running as usual, we haven’t missed a meal since 1983, so we will continue to run in spite of the storm" 

have stocked up on supplies. Eckenrode added "we are making sure we have adequate supplies for any situation, and we trying to be proactive to handle any situation (power outages, flooding and the such).

Community Vision of Interfaith Works, located on 8210 Colonial Lane, is offering shelter for anyone who needs in the area, said Mary Mulholland who works for the non-profit.

“We are open starting at noon and are holding regular hours for unsheltered homeless during the weekend. Also unsheltered homeless can come in any time during the night regardless of the storm conditions,” said Mulholland.

  • Richard Montgomery High School opens at 4 p.m. The shelter is located at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive, Rockville. Pets are not permitted at this shelter except for registered service animals. Individuals using the shelter should bring any medications, personal supplies, change of clothing or other items they may require with them.
  • Bauer Drive Community Center opens at 4 p.m. This Pet Shelter is located at 14625 Bauer Drive, Rockville.
