Speak Out: National Fireworks vs. Local Displays
Will you brave the crowds this year to visit the national fireworks display in Washington, DC?
Montgomery County is well situated for a national celebration like the Fourth of July. Living just a stone’s throw away from Washington, DC, residents of this county have ample opportunity to take advantage of what is arguably the most spectacular display of American patriotism each year—the national fireworks display.
The spectacle is so grand that even the organization that hosts it, the National Parks Service, suggests taking additional safety precautions:
“Consider wearing hearing protection. These fireworks are BIG and LOUD,” the Park Service warns. “Consider wearing eye protection to protect yourself from falling debris."
“Consider not bringing pets.”
So, what do you prefer? A relatively comfortable neighborhood display? Or does the fanfare and over-the-topness of the national display draw you in?

I used to like going down to the National Mall and getting close enough to feel the exploding fireworks thumping in my sternum (though not so much the ashes in my hair). Still its the traffic/Metro crowds that keep me going local in recent years. Columbia and Laurel are okay but this year I'm trying out Greenbelt.

I loved going to DC when I was younger. Now I stick to the displays closer to home.
