Transformer Fire Closes Briggs Chaney McDonald's, Blocks Traffic

A power pole fire at Briggs Chaney and Outlet Drive temporarily closed a shopping center and blocked all lanes of the roads.

Police officers cut off access to Briggs Chaney Plaza and temporarily shut down both north and southbound lanes of Briggs Chaney Road, from Route 29 to Castle Boulevard, Thursday afternoon.

According to Capt. Oscar Garcia, spokersperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, a power pole at Briggs Chaney Road and Outlet Drive caught on fire.

Fire crews arrived on the scene just before 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21 to subdue the flames.

The power pole, or transformer, was managed by Baltimore Gas & Electric and knocked out power for at least one business in the shopping center--McDonald's. Garcia said that other stores also lost power, but he could not confirm the businesses.
