Former UMD Championship Team Member Plunges to Death

Baltimore County police identified Earl Badu as the man who jumped from I-695 Thursday.

Earl Badu, 33, a member of the University of Maryland’s 2002 basketball national championship team, has been indentified as the man who died Thursday after jumping from Interstate 695 into a construction area on Interstate 95 near Perry Hall.

Baltimore County police identified Badu as the jumper in an email on Saturday.

According to University of Maryland’s athletic site, Badu was a member of the school’s 2002 National Championship team after walking onto the squad in the fall of 1998.

Badu, a graduate of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, died from his injuries at Bay View Medical Center.

According to electronic court records, Badu, who listed a PO Box in Bethesda as his address, was convicted of passing a bad check on Sept. 21.

I am not sure I believe in God, but I always wonder why true non-believers assume that if there is a God, nothing bad would ever happen to anyone.

Wow Tim, feel better about yourself insulting and questioning others faith?
Do people here question your lack of faith? Would you say anything like that to a radical Islamist?

@Evets - probably because most people of faith believe their god is omnipotent. Thus if omnipotent, why would such a being allow bad things to happen to anyone? The only logical answer is that this omnipotent being either chooses to allow it to happen or cannot stop it from happening or is not there at all.

@ Tim. What are you talking about?? Just like God told Adam & Eve not to eat from the forbidden tree, yet they did it anyway. This person went completely against God's will.

I'm talking about this:

You have no idea if God exists, and if so, in what capacity. Nor do you have any idea if God told Adam anything. You are believing a book written in bad English over two thousand years ago.

You have no idea of what reality is. You could be right. You could be wrong. You are using imaginary projections to judge the lives of others. You know, sort of like what Middle Eastern militants do.

Tim, that is why they call it faith in God and not Fact in God.
To question others faith is about as ignorant as it gets. But what ever it takes to make you feel more comfortable in your lack of faith.....

@Tim, the Book wasn't written in bad English, it was written in paleo-Hebrew, Hebrew, Chaldean/Aramaic, and Greek, and it was written across many centuries.

I perceive you would have a hard time recognizing an Almighty sentience since you apparently believe that the capacity to do something means the something will be done. On the contrary, everybody has multiple behavioral options they can manifest for any given situation, but they can only deploy one of them and so must make a choice.

Only an arrogant and brutally insensitive person would find in someone's suicide an occasion to press releatedly any such sophomoric opinion as Tim has belabored readers with here.

Concerned Citizen of Laurel, way to act like a good Christian. God doesn't want you to be angry. I honestly think you just made the baby Jesus cry. And while that upsets me I won't call you names. I'll just prey for you. As far as someone who questions God on a website - who cares? Get over it, be happy with your beliefs, and maybe quietly offer a prayer for those who don't believe.

Nice hypocritical behavior there. I'll just leave it at that. There will be better places to poke holes in Christianity then here.

Despite the debate in the above comments, the fact is a family lost a member. For someone to take their own life one can almost assume this man was in torment and saw no relief for himself on this earth. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family and friends.

The truth is, I was guilty of drunk Patch posting last night (bad Tim), and at no point did I 'intend' to detract from the tragedy itself. However, looking back this type of discussion was the wrong place and time. I just hate seeing people commit suicide.

I do sincerely apologize to any friends and family of the victim who read this, and felt as though I did. This'll be my final post on this thread.

Tim, people of faith try to live a good life because of their belief that they will be judged in the end for their living behavior. Your apology sounds empty after such insulting comments about others faith. And if you do not believe in any creator or judgement day then why bother to apologize? Is it to make yourself feel better about your postings?

Joe: I apologized solely because it wasn't my intention to detract from the tragedy itself.
However, that's what transpired. There was definitely a much better place to start a religion discussion then in an article discussing the unfortunate suicide death of a local person. This is why I apologized. Not for the content of my comments, but the location of them.

My reality is this: I don't need the threat of being judged to do the right thing in my day-to-day life.

Besides, when people screw up, you take accountability for what you do.

It's something that's really not found in society today.

I find most of these comments inappropriate. A family has lost a loved one to suicide. Earls's family and friends need our compassion and support. As someone who has lost a daughter to suicide, I can tell you that the pain Earl was in was horrific and unimaginable. But with his death, now his family and friends have to endure life without him. The real tragedy is suicide is preventable. 90% of those who die by suicide have a diagnosable and treatable mental health condition at the time of their death. Until we take the shame, stigma and silence out of suicide, the deaths will continue. Comments like some of the above just serve to isolate those who are struggling and they don't seek the help they need to live. To the Badu family and friends, my sympathy as you grieve the loss of Earl, and know that you are not alone.

Thank you very much, I am truly sorry for your loss as well. I am a friend of Earl's I cannot seem to find any information about funeral arrangements, I am stuck in saddness and confusion and would like to connect with others who knew him. I have called his number and no one picks up, I wish he had given me his parnets number, but as adults who would think I would need that becasue of this.
Thanks again.

Suicide is usually the permanent solution to a temporary problem. I concur with ms. Tagget who points out that 90% have a treatable mental health condition at the time of their final act.

Holy Mother Church holds that anyone who takes his own life is so out of touch with reality and therefore not guilty of the sin associated with Suicide, since he is not cognizant of the act itself. We pray for all of the souls having gone to their Eternal Rest in the hope of rising again on The Last Day. As the father of a son who took his own life, I hold the family of those who lose a loved one in such a way as this in my daily prayers. May Almighty god have mercy on them, forgive them their sins, and bring them to life everlasting, Amen.

I was friend's with Earl for 12 years and just spoke to him recently. I do not condone the choices he made but he was always a good friend to me. I would really like to attend his funeral if it isn't too late. I've been scouring the internet for information. I don't know how to contact you privately via patch, please provide some further information if possible.
