Upper Crust Bakery to Close Jan. 10

The bakery's parent company wants to focus on baking bread for grocery stores and restaurants.

After 17 years of freshly baked breads, pastries and sweets, Upper Crust Bakery announced this week it will close its Colesville retail store. Crest Hill Bakery, the store's parent company, wants to focus on baking bread for wholesale customers, said Diane Hayes, the manager at Upper Crust.

The store's last day open will be Jan. 10, 2013, Hayes said.

Currently, Crest Hill distributes breads locally to Whole Foods, Giant, Harris Teeter and Roots Market, a speciality store in Olney and Clarksville. Some breads also are available at farmers' markets and seasonal markets around Washington, DC and Montgomery County. (See a full list below.)

The cupcakes, cookies and other non-bread items that some customers have come to love will be harder to find once the store closes. Hayes said the rugelach and perhaps some cookies, tea cakes and pound cakes would be available at some of the farmers' markets in the future. Currently, only the Adams Morgan market offers sweets from Upper Crust.

Crest Hill began as a storefront bakery in the Colesville neighborhood of Silver Spring before expanding into a wholesale business with a warehouse in Beltsville, MD. The company offers over a dozen standard wholesale breads like challah and sourdough, along with another dozen or so speciality varieties like pumpkin bread and chocolate cherry bread, according to the website.

Hayes is offering customers in the store small cards to fill out with their contact information. When more news is available about which products will be sold at different markets, the customer will receive an email update, she said.

The Upper Crust was a wonderful part of our family history when we lived in Colesville. We have a huge extended family and someone was always being sent up to the Upper Crust during family get together a for more sourdough or other delicious breads. A favorite dish is Upper Crust sourdough grilled cheese made with Dubliner cheese. Sadly we had to sell the family house in Colesville last year.
