So far it's been a long, hot summer.
But it's not just us that the heat is beating up. A drought is killing crops across the country drying up ponds and other waterways leaving costly damage in its wake.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has been tracking the drought across the country for several months. More than 60 percent of the mainland U.S. is experiencing drought conditions as of this month, according to NWS.
The above animation shows how the drought has spread across the country since January 2012.
