The statement reads in full: “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and countless fans of Chuck Brown. When the Third District police station—located at 801 Sligo Ave.—vacates next year, East Silver Spring residents are advocating that an arts center should take the station's place instead of a new housing project. The station will be relocating closer to the Colesville area near the intersection of Colesville Road and New Hampshire Avenue. In 2009, the police station’s move was announced and shortly after Karen Roper, an East Silver Spring Civic Association board member, started her campaign for a community space that would be useful for artists, according a Greater Washington report. Crittenton Services, a Silver Spring-based company, celebrated 124 years of promoting healthy development of teens by recognizing four distinguished women for their leadership Wednesday at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC. Customers got a chance to sample a variety of foods.
During the second annual Taste the World in Fenton Village in downtown Silver Spring, 24 restaurants teamed up to celebrate international cuisine and music. Fenton Village is located between Wayne, Georgia and Burlington avenues and Fenton Street. Customers paid between $2 to $5 for appetizers or tasting plates from local restaurants. Participating restaurants include Abyssinia Restaurant, Kefa Café, Mandarin Restaurant and Thai Derm. A full list can be found on the event’s website. More than 150 kids from around Montgomery County rocked the stage at the Fillmore Silver Spring on Saturday for a growing music program called "Rock-in Schools." The movement's goal is to reform the music education around the nation by simultaneously introducing contemporary and traditional music programs. Despite overwhelming statistics on the positive impact of music instruction on overall academic performance and school attendance, a large percentage of secondary students do not participate in music education at school because instructors say they are not motivated by some of the traditional band and orchestra programs that comprise most public school music classes.
