Stories in Movement
The Sutradhar Institute of Dance & Related Arts, Devi Dance Theater along with the Children of Devi Dance Theater present their annual concert, “Stories in Movement”, at Montomery College's Cultural Arts Center - Sunday February 17th 2012 - 3pm
For more than two decades the Sutradhar Institute's Devi Dance Theater, a highly acclaimed premiere dance company known for its classicism has created cutting edge work around the world by forging new alliances between diverse musical traditions and movement genres. Focusing on 17th century Kuchipudi forms as its base, SIDRA’s mission is to transcend cultural, gender, and inter-generational barriers by providing students of diverse ages and nationalities the opportunity to work together on dance performance projects that involve classical poetry, creative writing, martial arts, storytelling, and yoga. SIDRA partners with local and international artists and organizations to work with students to realize commonalities, shared roots, and to inspire and encourage innovation.
Besides the usual fare of Kuchipudi marked by fast rhythms, micro-movements, and a spirit of abandon this year's "Stories in Movement" will feature excerpts from different choreographic works by Nilimma Devi, Anilia Kumari and Khilton Nongmaithon that delineate images of women throughout history and myth.
