Family Fun this Weekend in Montgomery County

From BlackRock to Big Train, here are some fun things to do around town with the family this weekend.

Why to go:  Co-presented by CASA. After appearing on NBC's The Sing Off, the Afro Blue Vocal Band returns to its home town.

First formed at Howard University, this 10-member vocal jazz a cappella ensemble has won multiple awards and performed alongside such names as Smokey Robinson, Geri Allen and Bobby McFerrin.

This a cappella evening also swings across the globe, bringing one of the best vocal groups in Italy - five young musicians who met at the Niccolai Paganini Conservatory of Music in Genoa. Cluster won millions of fans in its successful run on X Factor Italy.

Where/When:  GARRETT COLLEGE, 687 Mosser Road, McHenry, 7:00 PM music, 7:30 performance under the tent, Friday and Saturday.

(*In case of severe weather, program will be held indoors in Garrett College Auditorium).

Why to go:  The Maryland Humanities Council (MHC) is proud to present its 17th annual Chautauqua, offering vibrant living history performances, followed by question and answer with audience members.  Chautauqua 2012 commemorates the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

Chautauqua is kept FREE and open to the public via the generous support of sponsors and donors. Please note that schedule details may be subject to change.

Why to go:  Enjoy the original fine art and craft of 25 local and regional artists at the Bethesda Artist Market on June 9 and July 14 from 10am - 4pm. Shop for painting, jewelry, photography, wood, pottery, blown glass and more! Live entertainment is also featured throughout the day.

The Bethesda Artist Market is located on Norfolk Avenue, between Fairmont & St. Elmo Avenues. Free parking is available in the Woodmont Ave./Old Georgetown Rd. parking garage.

Where/When: Shirley Povich Field, 10600 Westlake Drive, Bethesda, MD 20852, 7:30 p.m. Friday

Why to go:  Come watch the Bethesda Big Train, the number one ranked Summer Collegiate Baseball team in the Nation! The Big Train are coming off their third consecutive Cal Ripken League Championship. Exciting baseball and family friendly entertainment for the entire family!

Where/When: BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, MD 20874, 7:00 p.m. Saturday

Why to go:  Enjoy an evening of rock/soul vocals. No tickets or reservations necessary; feel free to bring lawn chairs and non-alcoholic refreshment.

Where/When:  Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, 8230 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910, Saturday, July 14, 2012, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Why to go:  This workshop will cover the basics of letterpress printing with antique lead type on a Chandler & Price Pilot tabletop platen press.

Students will learn how to set lead type, operate the tabletop press, troubleshoot and clean and maintain the press. Each participant will hand set a few lines of text of their own choosing and print a small edition (10-15 prints).

Pricing: $130+$5.00 materials fee

Where/When: F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre, Rockville Civic Center Park, 603 Edmonston Drive, Rockville, MD  20851.

Why to go:  Presented by Rockville Musical Theatre, 17 dancers auditioning for a spot in a new Broadway play tell the director about themselves in song and dance in order to land one of eight roles, at F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. Tickets on sale.
