JustUs Youth! Media Festival for Change Set to 'Mix it Up' on Saturday

Gandhi Brigade's annual fest mixes creativity and social justice issues, for teens and adults

Silver Spring's Gandhi Brigade is gearing up for its fifth annual JustUs Youth! Media Festival for Change, set for this Saturday, 26 at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The festival showcases digital media creations by area youth to express their views on social issues, and features juried competitions in video, photography, performance, design, visual art, and a PSA (public service announcement) competition. The event will also feature interactive workshops, where the public is invited "to explore creativity and social change first-hand."

Highlights of the 2012 festival include:

  • Don’t Box Me In, an exploration of identity through spoken word presented by Split This Rock and members of the DC Youth Slam Team
  • I Define My Dream, a workshop by CASA de Maryland that uses student photography and video to educate people about the Maryland Dream Act
  • Social Justice through Movement, a workshop by Teen Exchange (a program of ), exploring connections to social justice and how to express them through dance and movement
  • Life Through Your Eyes, a basic introduction to recording that uses Flip Cams and iPhones to teach basic recording techniques, presented by the House Studio
  • Pan Workshop, where young people share the culture of Trinidad and Tobago through the steel drums
  • Chalk Art, in which young people show how to create street art with a social justice theme.

The festival gets underway Saturday, May 26 at 2:00 pm, at the Silver Spring Civic Building and Plaza. Major festival sponsors are the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Dynamic Animation Systems, Downtown Silver Spring, and Council member Valerie Ervin.
