Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Celebrations, Service Programs Across Montgomery County

How will you honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

42nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, Rockville

The featured speaker, Dr. Michael W. Nettles, is an ordained minister, author, addiction and mental health counselor, and the founder of Community Outreach Services, Inc. in Washington, D.C. The celebration will performances by The Finest IMPACT Troupe, singer Adele-Clarice, hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, jazz combo The Kawa Project, Soul in Motion and Vision Contemporary Dance Ensemble, and more. Also, the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award will be presented to a Rockville high school student who has worked to fulfill King's dream; the F. Michael Taff Award will be presented to an individual, organization or business that has helped improve the quality of the lives of people with disabilities.
When: 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20.
Where: Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive, Rockville MD
Cost: Free. Donation of a canned-food item suggested.

Day of Service Activities

Montgomery County Volunteer Center is organizing and coordinating indoor family-friendly service projects at locations across the county. The projects are all approved for Student Service Learning hours. Activities will take place at:

Organized by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
When: 10 a.m. to noon

Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center | 5701 Marinelli Rd., North Bethesda
Activities include decorating cards for troops, assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for local shelters, constructing fleece blankets for Montgomery Hospice and packing snow day boxes for Meals on Wheels. There will also be a Volunteer Fair that will showcase local nonprofits’ ongoing volunteer opportunities in Montgomery County.  
When: 1 to 3 p.m.

Additional projects are scheduled.

Musical Celebration

Montgomery County’s 20th anniversary of Montgomery County’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute and Musical Celebration carries the theme of “Honoring the Legacy:  Celebrate, Serve, Remember.” The event will feature a diverse array of performers. The 2014 recipients of the Children of the Dream, Humanitarian and Literary Arts Awards will be announced.
When: 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20
Where: Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda
Cost: Free, though tickets are required and may be reserved at Strathmore’s website at www.strathmore.org  (go to Events and Tickets), via phone at 301-581-5100 or in person at the Strathmore box office.  For individuals unable to secure advanced tickets, a stand-by line will form outside the Music Center at 2 p.m. on the day of the performance. No lines may form before the designated time. At 2:45 p.m. all tickets are null and void and patrons in the stand-by line will be allowed entry subject to available seating.

Literary Arts Contest Winners

For the 23rd year the City of Gaithersburg has teamed up with The Gazette to host a Literary Arts Contest for young people in the Gaithersburg area. More than 200 students addressed the theme, “Honoring the Legacy: Celebrate, Serve, Remember.”  Three students will read their winning essays Tuesday at Gaithersburg City Hall during the Gaithersburg City Council meeting, which starts at 7:30 p.m. The students are: 

  • Benjamin Bell, a sixth grader from St. Martin of Tours School,
  • Sarah Cooper, a fifth grader from Strawberry Knoll Elementary School
  • Kyle Dalrymple, a fifth grader from Rosemont Elementary School. Dalrymple also won a countywide Literary Arts essay contest and will join the other countywide winners in reading their works at the county’s musical celebration Monday at Strathmore.
