If the thought of adding more steps to your day sounds a little tiring, Montgomery County Commuter Services has just the thing for you: The 2012 Walk & Ride Challenge.
Employees of businesses in the Friendship Heights Transportation Management District are invited to participate in the challenge from Sept. 10 to 28. Participants register in company teams, and log in steps walked each day. Raffle prizes (like a Kindle) and awards (the first-place award is a $125 gift card for each team member) are just part of the fun.
Participants track their steps with pedometers provided by Montgomery County Commuter Services. Only walking steps should be counted—steps taken while exercising (running, jogging, aerobics classes, etc.) are not part of the challenge, according to the challenge website.
The event is designed to encourage commuters to incorporate walking into their daily routines. "The Challenge encourages everyone to get out of their car, take transit and get walking. Get fit just by going to work!" the challenge's website adds.
Register online. Early bird registration lasts through Aug. 10.
