Who's Silver Spring's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Obama their person of the year for the second time. Tell us who you think should win from Silver Spring.

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Obama its Person of the Year, again!

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including the president, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. But, the president took the title again four years after he first won the award as president-elect in 2008.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is Silver Spring’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”?

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

Alan Bowser should be in no doubt the 2012 Silver Spring person of the year. His passion, commitment and continued support to several organizations and causes in Silver Spring speaks for it self. The fact that County Executive, Mr. Ike Leggett named him Montgomery County's 2012 Volunteer of the year, should also be an indication to all, about the true feelings and success he has and wants for Silver Spring and it's community.

Alan Bowser gets my vote for Silver Spring's person of the year. (although I already consider him to be just that!) His dedication and support of many organizations is inspiring to so many! I have had the opportunity to work with him on the Summer Concerts and Blues Festival and he is always "there" for everyone. Silver Spring is a more creative, artistic and fulfilled place because of him! Saskia Van Oot

Alan Bowser. I am a jazz and blues singer. My association with Alan has been through his work producing blues music events and festivals in downtown Silver Spring. Alan has a strong commitment to the community, a passion for music and a great caring for the musical artists whose work he promotes. Combined with his organizational skill and ability to rally diverse members of the community around a task, he is highly effective. He should certainly be recognized for his efforts.

Silver Springs residents don't get to appreciate all the work Alan Bowser does in their behalf to make our.community an enviable place to live, work and do business. Why, because much of his efforts are "behind the scenes" where his many contributions go unnoticed. Naming Alan Bowser as "person of the year" would be a fitting and well deserved way of publicly acknowledging his work in behalf of Silver Springs. Ted Power

I took would like to nominate Alan Bowser as person of the year. His outstanding work in our silver spring community, is only complemented by his sincere dedication to our citizen who live here. His accomplishments with the Silver spring town center and his dedication to our nation heroes ensuring that there is a tribute to these men and women each year with a concert at the Silver Spring Veterans Plaza and donating proceeds of the event to veterans in need, makes him an ideal candidate for person of the year. Earlier this year he was honored by our County Executive with the Volunteer of the Year Aware, let us honor him in 2013 with Person of the Year Award. Sharon Hodge Silver Spring resident

I would like to nominate Alan Bowser for the Silver Spring Person of the Year award. Over theI Years I have attended many events in Silver Spring, from the Annual Blues Festivals to the November Veterans honors, all of which he helped organize or started. At the recent County wide Arts and Humanities Awards, his service in other areas such as the Citizens Advisory Board, Sligo Creek Golf Course and his neighborhood were also mentioned, to name only a few as he received their Volunteer of the Year Award. A community is made up of many facets: arts, volunteerism, public education, recreation, community services and safety - in each of these vital areas you can find a contribution from Alan. I doubt that many others can duplicate his efforts. -- Sharon Dooley

I nominate Alan Bowser as well. And after all the praise from the others here on this post, I have nothing more to add other than as a personal note, he's a very good friend - loyal, dedicated and committed to his integrity and community above all else. Well, except for his dogs, maybe.

I agree that Alan Bowser is Silver Spring's person of the year. His commitment to the community is tireless and quite frankly, without his efforts, Silver Spring would no be the vibrant place it is.

Alan Bowser should definitely be considered for Silver Spring's Person of the Year, for all of the hard work he's done presenting free concerts in downtown Silver Spring. Thanks to his volunteer work with Silver Spring Town Center, and the Silver Spring Blues Festival, we've enjoyed dozens upon dozens of wonderful shows.

Alan Bowser gets my vote for Silver Spring Person of the Year. Alan truly has been "A Man About Town." He has worked diligently with the Silver Spring Town Center, Inc, the Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment Committee & the Silver Spring Blues Festival, among many other organizations. He has promoted the "Tribute to America's Veterans" Concerts to recognize & honor local veterans. Alan is frequently a "behind the scenes" presence, making these events happen, most often with a smile on his face. He then documents many of the events & posts his photos online, for more people to see.

We would like to nominate Mr. Alan Bowser, as Silver Spring Person of the year. Mr. Bowser has been very active and involved is many aspects of Sliver Spring life. Starting with his own community within Silver Spring, he restarted the Park Hills Civic Association several years ago and served as its president for the first couple of years. In this and subsequent involvement, Mr. Bowser has organized our PHCA fall picnics and has made sure that local politicians were invited and participated. Mr. Bowser has been very involved in keeping Sligo Creek Golf Course from being turned into a driving range and putt-putt course. On a broader scale, he has been very involved in developing and promoting the ‘Silver Spring Blues Festival and the Tribute to America’s Veterans Concerts. In addition his participation on the Presidents’ Council of Silver Spring Civic Associations, Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment Committee and the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board has helped bring artisans to downtown Silver Spring during the summer months. His volunteer activities are already well recognized by his being named Volunteer of the Year in Montgomery county in 2012. Alan Bowser is the person who comes to mind when I think of the leader in Silver Spring. James and Deanna Anderson
