Adopt a Pet: Petals the Cat

Petals is a one year old, gray and white female cat who came to Homeward Trails Animal Rescue from West Virginia. She was the favorite of the shelter manager there, who begged the group to take her and find her a good home. Her foster parent, Kate von Richthofen, said that she's sweet, playful, and "gets along with other animals splendidly."

She can also entertain herself for hours on end with her favorite toy, a kind of a circular track with a ball trapped in it. But she's also very people-oriented, said her foster mom: "She comes when you call her like a dog, and runs to the door to greet people."  She'll also try to get visitors to play with her toy with her. "When people come in, she'll run over and look at them like "Help! Let's do it together," said von Richthofen.

Petals is also great with kids: von Richthofen is nanny to a four year old , "They entertain each other, which gives me a break." She's too young and energetic at the moment to sit still for a lot of petting, but von Richthofen thinks she'll mellow into a great lap cat as she grows up.

Homeward Trails has been in operation for 9 years and now has a network of 100 foster homes around the DC area. At any time they have an average of 200 cats and dogs looking for homes, and place about 1000 pets per year. Since they have no central shelter facility, you can only meet a number of their pets at once at events like the one this Saturday, September 18th from 12:00 - 2:00 at Living Ruff, 8517 Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring.
