County Council Supports the Arts in Silver Spring

Tax benefits for artists set to be renewed for another 10 years.

Montgomery County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to support an application to re-designate downtown Silver Spring as an Arts and Entertainment District.

Downtown Silver Spring has been designated as an arts district since 2002 but was due to lose its designation in June 2012.

Arts and Entertainment Districts are provided with incentives to grow their economies around the arts, including income tax breaks to artists and tax breaks for developers who build spaces for artists to live and work.

The application, with county council and executive support, is due to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development for a review by Oct. 1.
