Documentary Production Class

This hands-on class for new filmmakers focuses on how to plan, shoot and edit a documentary film. The class will introduce participants to screen language and sequencing and provide hands-on experience with digital video cameras and the Final Cut Pro editing system.

Participants will work in small teams to produce a 3-5 minute short documentary shot in the surrounding area of downtown Silver Spring.

Stories will be assigned and are drawn from people and places in downtown Silver Spring. Past participants have produced films about small businesses like the Tastee Diner and the Silva Shoe Repair, nonprofits like Gandhi Brigade, and arts organizations like the Knock on Wood Tap Studio and Roundhouse Theatre, and local themes such as the building of the new civic center. The class will culminate with a mini film festival where participants can share their film with family and friends.  To see some of the "Silver Spring Stories" produced by production students, visit our YouTube Channel.
