An exhibit of photographs (circa 1953-1954) of the Dodos, an enigmatic culture of people who lived in Uganda, is free open to the public at the Riderwood Village Square Crafts Studio, 3140 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, MD. It will run through November and can be seen weekdays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Riderwood resident Walter Deshler took the photos when was in Uganda studying on a Fulbright Grant. He assimilated among the Dodos and photographed their interaction with one another, portraying an aspect of life rarely seen. The photos show butchered cattle. They also show daily life in Dodos settlements. Some photos show women grinding grain in a settlement. Others show pregnancy, and aging. In sum, the photos depict a culture defined by self-confidence and difficult labor in a harsh environment. Deshler constantly photographed livestock, farm fields, crop cultivation and gathering activities as part of his main study. People became accustomed to his activity.
