Should The Fillmore Cancel 'Anti-Gay' Concert?

Report: County Executive Isiah Leggett asks the Silver Spring music venue to cancel an August performance by the Mexican band Molotov because of anti-gay lyrics.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) has asked The Fillmore in Silver Spring to cancel an upcoming performance by Mexican rap-metal band Molotov, The Washington Post reported.

Leggett wrote in a letter to The Fillmore that he is "personally offended" by the band's use of anti-gay language in its Spanish song lyrics.

The Washington Blade, an LGBT newspaper in DC, reported that LGBT Latino activists say that two of the controversial words "sometimes are used in different ways but are widely interpreted as a slur against gay men."

However, the band's supporters say that the words are "meant to target corrupt politicians in Mexico as part of the band’s advocacy for social justice," the Blade reported.

Here's more from Leggett's letter to The Fillmore, posted on Maryland Juice:

"I have serious concerns about this booking. I am personally offended. I understand that the First Amendment provides for freedom of speech, and that even distasteful speech may be protected speech. I also know that under the lease agreement signed between Montgomery County and Live Nation, the County has no say in specific artistic content booked at the facility. And, of course, controversy over extreme song lyrics is not new or uncommon."

The band is scheduled to play Aug. 26. Opponents have created a petition at Change.org.
