Pizza places are about as commonplace in Silver Spring as the penguin logo–it’s tough to walk a block and not run into one. There’s carry-out, dine-in delivery, thin crust, deep dish, white pizza, stuffed crust, Chicago and my personal favorite, New York-style pizza, which Colesville Road’s excels at.
So, what makes New York-style different? First of all, it is called a pie, not a pizza, and the individual triangles are not “pieces” but “slices.” Flippin’ Pizza captures the thin, Neapolitan-style crust very nicely, by using water from New York and making their dough daily. Put a slice next to a piece of Chicago-style and it will look a lot like one of those “before and after” pictures that always accompany diet supplement ads.
And like its place of origin, “The Big Apple,” these pies are not for the faint of stomach, measuring in at an impressive 18 inches (most other pizza places’ large offerings are in the 14-inch range).
You can get a cheese slice for $2.25, a slice with topping for $2.75, one of their “classic pies” in red or white, with great names like Bronx, Triboro, Brooklyn and Whitestone for $18.00, or explore your inner gourmet with Flippin’s “custom pies” which start at $14.00 with toppings an additional $1.75 each. Flippin’s toppings are a nice middle-ground between the traditional meats and veggies found at most pizza places and the upscale and sometime unusual offerings like arugula, squash, chorizo or falafel. The list includes your favorites, plus artichokes, roasted red peppers, and pesto.
The menu also includes chopped salads and calzones, plus drinks.
Flippin’ pizza takes their name very literally, stop by and watch the employees flip the dough to stretch it out before making your pizza – it’s not something you see very often anymore.
