Bites Nearby: Santucci’s Italian Deli

With virtually limitless choices for dining out in Silver Spring, how do you know which places are worth your hard earned dollars (and time)? Well, Bites Nearby will get you patched in to all the best places in the area.

The meatball sub—a bun, loaded with a line of meaty spheres, drenched in marinara sauce and smothered in cheese. Sounds pretty simple, right? While the ubiquitous hot sandwich can be found at Jerry’s, Armands and the many sub shops that dot the Silver Spring landscape, finding an authentic one can be a challenge.

Until you walk in to Woodmoor Shopping Center’s Santucci’s that is …

Parking in the front of the shopping center can be a bit trying at times, but there is usually ample parking in the back—and it’s worth the extra effort for this meatball sub. Most days, you can find manager Kevin Sharpe preparing the succulent star of the sub by hand.

“Our meatballs are based on the owner’s family recipe. I’ve never counted, but we probably make several hundred of them in a week,” Sharpe said.

The 10-inch meatball sub is a bargain at $7 and features a toasted bun, four meatballs, homemade marinara and provolone cheese. Santucci’s features a full line of deli sandwiches, pizza (with dough made daily) and traditional Italian fare such as several different pastas and desserts.

Seating is pretty limited, especially during lunch rush from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., so plan to get there early, or just order it to go!
