Fire at Wheaton Mall Blamed on Grease Buildup

The fire and mall's evacuation didn't keep shoppers out of the mall, authorities said.

A fire at Crisp and Juicy at Westfield Wheaton mall was caused by a build-up of grease in duct work over the cooking area, says WTOP.

The fire began around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, the station says. Firefighters quickly knocked out the blaze and the mall reopened shortly after 2:30 p.m. after large fans were used to clear the mall of smoke.

Authorities told the station damage was estimated at $180,000. A firefighter suffered minor injuries.
