After much anticipation and speculation, the H&M retail gods have finally answered the prayers of the budget-conscious: The downtown Silver Spring location will open its doors Thursday, Nov. 8 at noon.
The fashion retail chain Hennes & Mauritz, popularly known as H&M, said it is excited to expand its brand in the Washington, DC, area and provide local residents with affordable and fashion-forward clothing.
"H&M is thrilled to be entering an area as lively as downtown Silver Spring," said Daniel Kulle, U.S. president for H&M. "Customers in the Washington, DC, area have responded enthusiastically about the brand and we have seen great success with our expansion throughout this region."
There are two other H&M locations in Montgomery County—one in Westfield Wheaton mall and one in White Flint mall in North Bethesda.
H&M is announcing its arrival in Silver Spring with a couple of philanthropic contests.
The store is sponsoring the second "High School T-Shirt Slogan Contest," which is open to students from DC, Maryland and Virginia. As part of the chain's partnership with Mentor Foundation USA, an organization that prevents substance abuse, students may enter original anti-drug slogans for a chance to win an H&M gift card and have their slogan featured on an H&M shirt sold in stores next year. A quarter of the proceeds from the shirts will go back to the foundation, the company said.
The store is also planning a career workshop for local high school students interested in the retail business on the opening day of the downtown Silver Spring location. Participants will learn about the process of opening a new store as well as the ins and outs of running a popular retail chain.
For all the real H&M lovers, be one of the first 100 shoppers in line for a chance to win an H&M t-shirt and an "Access to Fashion Pass," worth anywhere from $10 to $300.
H&M is located at 8518 Fenton Street. Store hours will be Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Call (855) 466-7467 for more information.
