Police in Silver Spring Implement Police “Safe City” Program

The program launched in 2003.

Montgomery County Police Department and the Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce joined together to implement the Target Corporation’s “Safe City” Crime Prevention Program in the Silver Spring business district.

In an effort to reduce crime, Safe City--a Target Corporation initiative launched in 2003--is encouraging the sharing of information and the use of technology to unite law enforcement, local businesses and community organizations to build safer communities.

To work towards these goals officials are emphasizing the sharing of information at meetings and via e-mail and real-time communication including closed-circuit television (CCTV) equipment.

Many of the activities promoted by Safe City are already being addressed informally in the Silver Spring business district. The Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce sponsors a monthly security meeting for its retail and corporate members.

In turn, these businesses meet monthly with the police department to address issues of mutual concern.  An e-mail list is also maintained so that people can quickly share information. The police department encourages businesses and residents to join Alert Montgomery, the Montgomery County Police Department (Official) Facebook page and Montgomery County Police on Twitter (@mcpnews). Crime prevention surveys for businesses have been available but are now being offered as an official part of this program.

Any business located within the Silver Spring central business district that would like to learn more or take part in this preventative program is asked to contact 3rd District Lieutenant Robert Carter at 301-565-7740.
