Quick Facts: What You Should Know about the Fillmore Silver Spring

Fillmore Silver Spring was a major part of the master plan for revitalizing the downtown area about a decade ago.

Although new to Silver Spring, the Fillmore brand has a rich history of spotlighting some of the greatest musicians, bands, comedians and poets.

The original Fillmore Auditorium was named for its location at the corner of Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard in San Francisco, Calif.

Diverse acts from the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding to non-musical acts like Lenny Bruce and Allen Ginsberg all performed at the original Fillmore.

The original Fillmore was damaged by an earthquake in October of 1989 and re-opened five years later with sets by Smashing Pumpkins.

In the past decade, Live Nation has expanded the Fillmore brand by opening venues all over the country. The company has venues in Denver, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York City, Miami Beach and now Silver Spring.

Here are a few fun facts about the Fillmore and its origins:

1. The Fillmore Silver Spring ground Sept. 2, 2010.

2. During his speech at the groundbreaking, County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) said, “One of the challenges for revitalizing Silver Spring has always been this block. Other places have thrived, but [Silver Spring] will not be complete until we get this job done."

3. This music venue is built on the site of the 1948 historic J.C. Penney Co. building.

4. The Fillmore Silver Spring can seat 500 to 2,000 people.

5. So far, the venue has three sold-out shows, including Mary J. Blige, Lewis Black and Trey Anastasio Band.

6. The Fillmore music venue is about 23,000 square feet.

7. The original Fillmore was created in San Francisco, Calif., by Bill Graham.

9. Taxpayers contributed $11.2 million to the project.
