Silver Spring to Become New Home to Radio One in September 2011

Radio group will add to Silver Spring's growing list of media companies.

Radio One, the country’s largest broadcasting company that primarily targets African-American and urban listeners is ending its almost 15-year stay in Lanham and relocating to a 20,000 square-foot space in the Atrium of the Station Square building, as reported in The Gazette.

The addition of Radio One and TV One gives downtown Silver Spring an impressive array of far-reaching media companies, joining one of the world’s largest conglomerates, Discovery Communications.

The move is the latest in a series of large company moves from Prince George’s to Montgomery County, following on the heels of Integral Systems—a satellite provider—in 2009 and Merkle—a marketing agency in 2008.

Jim Estepp, president and CEO of the Greater Prince George's Business Roundtable, recognizes the void the Radio One’s will leave, and feels the county needs to focus on learning what attracts businesses to Silver Spring and seeing if it can duplicate that.

The move may have been prompted by economic incentives from both the State of Maryland and Montgomery County. The State offered $400,000 in a conditional grant, provided the company met certain spending and employee retention thresholds. Steven A. Silverman, Montgomery County’s economic development director is withholding specifics until Radio One’s lease in finalized.
