Support Grows for New Co-Op in Silver Spring
With the closure of the Silver Spring location of the TPSS Co-Op, support is growing for a new co-op in Silver Spring.
With the Silver Spring location of the TPSS (which stands for Takoma Park Silver Spring) Co-Op closed, some Silver Spring residents are looking to start a new co-op in Silver Spring, according to a blog post on Silver Spring Patch.
The Facebook page for a new Silver Spring co-op was created on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 17, and already had 27 "likes" by the following Monday afternoon. By 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, on the eve of the Silver Spring TPSS location's closure, the Facebook page had 79 "likes."
According to a poll created by supporters of a new Silver Spring co-op, most of the 74 participants in the poll would join the co-op if it had a yearly membership fee.
The poll "is giving us some really good feedback and I'm hoping to get a lot more respondents," Matthew Hersh—who is behind the effort to see if there's enough interest to create a new co-op in Silver Spring—told Patch in an email.
"There seem to be some really passionate people who feel it's a good asset for the community." The only question, he said, is whether there are "enough of us to support a store."
"I think we are getting close to putting together the core group who will become the first board," Hersh added.
