The Traffic Group Completes Two Short-Term Pedestrian Counting Projects in Silver Spring

The Traffic Group, Inc. (TTG) – one of the nation’s leading traffic engineering and transportation planning firms – has recently completed two short-term pedestrian counting projects in Silver Spring, Maryland. Both projects yielded significant results and were commissioned by Petrie Ross Ventures, a premier developer of retail centers and mixed-use properties in the Mid-Atlantic.

“The Traffic Group’s completion of these two projects – and study’s results – have been extremely helpful and useful, providing information that is easy to understand,” said Walt Petrie, Chairman at Petrie Ross Ventures. “These study results, which our leasing team has been able to point to in discussions with potential retailers, have helped us adjust rental budgets accordingly and sign more tenants.”

The first project targeted the southeast quadrant of US 29/Colesville Road and Fenton Street while the second focused on the southwest corner of Ellsworth Avenue and Fenton Street. The purpose was to gain an understanding of the number of people passing by the location either on foot or bicycle. These details have been incorporated into sales materials for the brokers responsible for leasing the space.

“We are thrilled that we have been able to help Petrie Ross Ventures become more effective and efficient as a result of our pedestrian counting services,” said Wes Guckert, PTP, and President of The Traffic Group. “As the trend for more walkable and bikeable lifestyles take hold, knowing exactly when and where people are going – and how many – helps developers, land use planners, and retailers determine where to locate new facilities and how much rent to charge.”

This non-intrusive service utilizes the latest infrared technology to detect people on foot – as well as cyclists - distinguishing them from motorized vehicles. With a 10-year battery life, the technology can detect pedestrians and cyclists as far away as 45 feet.

The technology also can record data in a specific direction, pick up fast moving objects, and can be operated with a wireless phone modem. The technology ignores motorized traffic.

Beyond pedestrian and bicycle counting, TTG provides consultation on all aspects of projects dealing with the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Through use of sophisticated technology and the in-house experience of more than 70 industry professionals, TTG offers services that help determine road improvements, signal and sign location, lighting plans, land usage, public facility and capacity issues, and security measures. With over 3,000 pieces of traffic data collection equipment, The Traffic Group has the largest inventory of such equipment in the U.S. and conducts more than 100,000 counts for clients annually.

TTG provides progressive traffic engineering by offering Automated/Robotic Parking consultation, the design of Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDIs), and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) consulting services.  For more information about The Traffic Group, visit the company’s website at www.trafficgroup.com.
